Subject: your MOST satisfying/rememberable win or round?
Mine was last year when I visited my bro in law (ex - now). He's a
few yr's older & he's always kinda looked at me like my sister's
little brother & always had a snide comment. So I said to my girl
friend that day, "If I can beat that arogent SOB, it will be a happy
day". I eaked him out by 2 strokes - using his old clubs! Ahh it was
good! In hindsite, I got to know him a little better. Unfortunatly he
& my sis were seperating that week. He's not soo bad, after all.
Actually had 3 MAJOR wins last yr. Beat my other bro in law for the
1st time. I actually like him (like a real brother) & he's a good
golfer. And I beat my X girl friend several times. She got me started
& is very good.

Good 4 u Randy, You hung tough and perseveered, That is what my
stories are about and some of mine I dont have it. I want to get
better there in the trenches. When I do have it those are the days
that fade most slowly from memory...There was a 80 with my bud flubie
where I hit sandwedge from all over to with in 10 feet. On another
day I shot the 41 front followed by a 37 durring a barrage of phone
calls about some nonsense. Congadulations on that victory. I know you
still smile at odd moments reflecting on that accomplishment. Fun isnt
it?

For me it was a match played about 30 years ago. When I was a MSgt in
the Air Force circumstances forced me to play with my Commnder, a total
ass, about once ever couple of weeks. I hated it but you do what you
gotta' do to survice.

I retired, went to college, got some good instruction, played on my
college golf team (at age 40 that was a hoot!), graduated, went to work
and a few years later happened to run into my former commander at a
miitary golf course. He started egging me to play and I finally told
him, "Colonel, your game isn't good enough to play with me anymore."
Red flag in front of bull!

Upshot, we played a money match, match play, $1 a hole and automatic
presses at two down. He halved a few holes but never won a hole, not
one, and ended up writing me a check for a fair sum. Once he wrote it I
looked at it, tore it up and put it in front of him and said, "I told
you that you weren't good enough to play me."

One of the most satisfying days of my life.

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between
two golfers neither of whom can putt very well.

I've always enjoyed playing "single digit handicappers" for a 2 buck
or so nassau. Last time I won was a 4 handicapper at a local muni last
year (last time I played one of these things I think). I win these
often enough that I don't know if I am up or down, but even if I lost
every one it would still be worth it to me. I can't beat a real 4
handicapper, of course, but a guy who shoots mid 80's can be had by a
hack like me on a course I play regularly! Even when they guy is legit
and I lose, it's at least a learning experience, and I've played many
rounds with some pretty good golfers......but as anyone who has been
around knows, most of these guys are phoneys.

Mine was many years ago, in a game where I was the giver of strokes
against 3 others and they took the putter out of my bag, so I played 18
using my LW to putt and won! :)

Is there enough diskspace on the internet for that? I have lofty
expectations, so it might be too much (and tough to choose just one)!

I was playing very well in a tournament years back, about one under
after 14 when I fell apart. It started with a shank of a TWO IRON.
When you shank a two iron, it all goes downhill from there....I think
I finished 6 or 7 over.

Yeah, I would've said as my most memorable moment was last week when
my five-year old daughter making a 7 on a par 4 (kid's length), her
best score on a hole yet (and her first time out this year), but she
didn't really care that much. She just likes hitting the ball....and
thinks the point of the game is to see how fast you can get it in the
hole!

enjoy my time w/ him but he drives me fucking nuts & takes me out of

Most memorable was the last round(s) I played with my Dad -- he had

golf.

High school, 1967 or 68. We were playing the best school in the county. Our
coach, stacked our team so that we could get a few wins in a 9 hole match
play event, by our best guys beating their worst. I was the number 6 man out
of 6 and they put me to second, I think, and I played one of the best
golfers in town, probably top twenty in all of the high schools. We played
at the Dunes, in Las Vegas, our home course. (now that was a trip for 3
years to play almost every week day at the Dunes). I birdied the first hole
for the one and only time in 3 years. He fell apart and I beat him 3 and 2
or 2 and 1. Everybody on my team thought it was great and a little
unbelievable. Gary and his brother are both pros now and I don't think he
remembers that day.

A Dead Bastard, apparently.

My best was watching my wife get her first birdie on a legit Par 3 at
Soldier Hollow last year - her first full year of golfing. Downhill
177 yarder. She knocks her 4-Iron to about 20' and made the putt that
was never in doubt from the time it left the mallet. My wife has the
prettiest smile on the planet and that moment proved it.

I have two that come to mind -- satisfying was when I played with my
father-in-law for the first time -- it was at his exclusive private club --
@ $50,000.00 or more for a membership.

We get to the 1st tee & we joined up with 2 of his buddies -- he introduces
me to a retired President of MAJOR steel company & a former Congressman.

The 1st hole is a dogleg left par 4 & I ask them where I should aim since I
have no idea of the yardages etc ... They say aim right between those 2
fairway bunkers because you'll never reach them.

I striped right over the gap. They said a bunch of Ohhhh's...

I played out my butt & except for struggling with a couple 3 putts on the
Bermuda greens that we northerners never see -- I came in with a 78.

He was thrilled & he said he bragged about his son-in-law's game with them
quite a while.

Most memorable was the last round(s) I played with my Dad -- he had cancer &
was on oxygen & had a catheter but we were playing something that resembled
golf.

We played all the way up to 3 weeks before he died.

The story is not meant to be a tear jerker -- we were having fun.
I don't think I ever play without thinking about those rounds & smiling
about them.

If forced, perhaps I would choose my putt-off with Pitts at RSG-ATL,
probably because it was recorded as a radio broadcast. The build-up

Jack and I don't remember the bad shots. I guess topping the ball 3 times on
the first hole during the first city championship tournament I played in
would have been, if I could remember it.

Oh there is the time I had to give my 9 hole score to a cute cheerleader
from our school during the state championship - 46. Fourtunately she didn't
know whether a high or low score was better. Or she was being kind. Now, a
46 wouldn't hurt my feelings much.

It was my club championship last year. I shot a 42 on the front --
pretty good for my flight -- and was five down at the turn. I threw a
nifty 38 at my opponent and made it back to all square walking off the
18th green.

We go to a 165 yard par three for the first playoff hole. I have the
honors and knock it to 10'. My opponent makes ace.

Bastard.

Without a doubt, mine was the first time I won anything even halfway
meaningful on a golf course. It was at RSG-MEMPHIS '99. Ken Pitts and I
finished tied (I think we both shot 84 or something like that). In his
defense, Ken tripled a par three late in the round, otherwise I wouldn't
have had a prayer. But I did three-putt the 18th to finish tied. Honestly,
when we finished the home hole, we both figured David Laville, playing in
the group ahead, and who played great in the morning practice round and had
made every putt he looked at, probably had posted a better score, but much
to our surprise, we finished tied for the lead. So it went to a putt-off.
Three holes, aggregate. If after three holes it was still tied, it would go
to sudden death.

I led off and promptly three-putted the first hole. Ken got down in two, so
I was behind the 8-ball from the outset. We both two-putted the second
hole. On the third hole, Ken, who had won the honors after I three-jacked
the first hole, led off and just missed the 30-footer, tapping in for a two.
It was down to this. I had to make the 30-footer, or it was over. And sure
enough, I drained it, forcing sudden death. Now I had the honor back,
leading off this time on a downhill 40-footer. I had the right speed, but
missed it about four feet left of the hole. Ken misjudged the speed (it was
getting quite dark) and overshot the target by a bit, and his ball came to
rest against the fringe about 10 feet from the cup. He missed the second
putt and tapped in for a 3. I had this little four-footer for the win. I
had said all week leading up to the event that I had no chance against
players like Pitts, Laville and a few others who I knew were better players
than me. "Unless," I said, "it comes down to putting." Never in my wildest
dreams would it do just that. I stood over the four-footer and made it to
win the first RSG event I ever attended, capturing the Elvis Cup (which I
still proudly display in my studio).

It was the happiest I've ever been on a golf course. Well, except for that
one night when I nailed Melissa what's-her-name under the giant live oak
tree beside the 7th fairway under the light of the midnight moon. But
that's another story.

Kelly Newell........ taking a picture I believe.

The only person who said anything was a certain Scotsman who whispered
"He's the worst putter in RSG" as I was in the middle of my routine. I
canned it just to spite him. :-p

My most "memorable" round (and win) was the last round of my old
club's championship. The first round was led by the best player at
our public course. He shot 69 vs my 72. He was a stockbroker who
played to a +1, partly due to the fact that he flew down to
Leadbetter's Academy every few weeks for lessons. We were casual
friends, but most of the regulars at the club didn't like him, so we
had a lot of people following us and almost all of them were rooting
for me. I caught him on the front nine and we slugged it out on the
back until he finally fell apart (with the help of some bad luck) on
the 17th. I played safe the last two holes (bogies) for a hard-fought
73.

:::patting self on back complete:::

Ahhh, the good 'ole days.

I was playing in a handicapped matchplay tournament. The second
round, I drew a friend of mine. I had to give him seven holes and
played the front nine like a complete dog. I was three down going in
to the back nine, after shooting a 43.

On the back nine, he got four holes, so I was down by a mile before
we teed it up at the tenth. We both parred the 10th hole, still three
down. The 11th is a stroke hole for him. I birdied, he bogied--two
down. The 12th hole is also a stroke hole for him, a difficult par
three. He bogied, I birdied--one down. The 13th hole is a dogleg
left. If you can hit a draw, you can chase it down to about 40 yards
short of the green´. I overcooked the drive and sent it sailing left,
OB. After a double bogey, I am back to two down. The 14th hole is a
very long par five. My third shot ended just short of the green and I
would have liked to have putt the ball but there was a sprinkler cap
directly on my line. Forced to chip, I hole the shot for a birdie, he
makes bogey (another stroke hole for him) and I am back to one down.
The next hole is a short par three and I have a 15 footer for birdie.
Not any easy putt, though, and I leave the ball hanging on the lip. We
both made par and I am still one down. The 16th is a short par five.
My third shot leaves me with a 12 footer from hell and I leave the
putt hanging on the edge again--still one down. The 17th is a
difficult par four. The approach is to an elevated green (about 20
feet and you can only see the top of the flag), his last stroke hole.
I pull my approach shot left of the green and the ball is sitting on
the fringe about 30 feet from the hole sliding left to right. I hole
the putt for my fourth birdie on the back nine and he makes bogie and
we are even going in to the last hole.

The 18th hole is a straight forward par four. It is a great hole
because the terrace to the restaurant sits above and behind the green.
There is always a group of golfers sitting on the terrace placing all
kinds of bets on the golfers coming down the fairway. Actually, the
betting starts with the tee shots.

I hit my approach to 12 feet and leave the putt hanging on the lip
one more time. My opponent was pretty rattled and after missing the
green with his approach shot in the worst possible place one could
imagine, he makes bogey and I win the match 1-up.

It was my most memorable win, because I birdied all of his stroke
holes on the inward nine and did not let the stupid double bogie get
to me. The three putts I left hanging on the lip bugged me, because I
was that close to shooting a 31 with a double bogie, but it did not
happen :-( My opponent is a great guy and he had more fun telling
eveyone about my back nine than I did, I think :.-)

My most satisfying win came in a stroke play tournament. My HI on
the card was 7.1, but I had been playing to about a 1.5 for four
weeks. I had just won three tournaments in a row and a buddy came up
to me on the range before the round and said that it looked like I
would not win this one. There was a player in the field with an HI of
0.8.

I told my buddy that the tournament is not over yet. We were
playing in the same group and coming in to 17 we were tied at two over
par. The 17th is a 220 yard par three, well-bunkered. Normally, I
hit a smooth 3-iron here, but I decided to see if I could get inside
my opponent's head a bit.

I choked down on a three-wood and proceeded to block the shot right
in to the very bad spot in a bunker--downhill lie. My opponent
thought a bit before pulling out his three wood (we hit the ball the
same distances) and proceeded to smash it over the green in to a
valley. The pin was in the back of the green, which sloped severely
from back to frontfrom that position.

I was elated, but I still had my problem shot to deal with. There is
no way this guy is making par from where he is, so I though :-) He
hit a great pitch shot that ended up two feet from the hole. Now the
pressure is on me, because there is no way he is going to miss this
putt.

I hit a great bunker shot that ended up just outside of his ball. I
made my par--the seventh sand save of the day for me, out of seven
tries. I was not hitting my approach shots too well that day.

The 18th is short par four (325 yards) that is drivable, but there
are some well-placed bunkers that don't make the attempt worth it if
it is not necessary.

Still tied, I took out a 5-iron and proceeded to hit the thing
thin--but straight. The ball ended up in the middle of the fairway
leaving me a PW to the green. My opponent took out his 3-wood and
hooked it left, directly behind a tree. He basically had not shot to
the green , but gave it a good effort. Unfortunately for him, he
launched the ball over the green and OB. I played my approach to the
middle of the green and two-putted for the win and my fourth win in a
row.

My buddy, who was playing a couple of groups behind us, came over to
me after his round was complete. With a smirk on his face, he asked
how it went. I told him I won by two and his jaw hit the floor and he
bought me a drink. That was perhaps my most satisfying win.
