can anybody tell me the time, when the mac gregor jack nicklaus
muirfield persimmons were usual?
Are they (or any other persimmons) still in use (of course by amateurs)
on US-courses?
As a german golfer (persimmons are really not existing here) I very
appreciate your answers.

I'll leave the technical answers to the more expert minds in this
group, but, I would suspect that the advanced materials and larger
sweetspot forgives strokes that aren't tagged right on the screws.

That's a duh, dug. If I hit my best drive with my persimmon driver, and
also with my (now low-tech) Titleist 975 D, the wooden one probably costs me
10 yds. On a mishit ball with both, that goes up to about 40 yds. Since I
tend to use the entire face of my metals, I'm pretty thankful for their
forgiveness. However, the tiny face of my 5W is getting harder to find.
I'm seriously considering replacing it with my wooden 4W. Bigger face, goes
about the same distance, feels soooooo good when you hit it on the insert.
If only I weren't separated from it by 1000 mi. when I thought of this.

Unc

PS Did I mention that those wooden clubs in your bag look good enough to
eat?

I'm still surprised that you saw that much loss. When I had my
Louisville golf driver out on the range, others that tried it didn't
lose nearly that much with center hits. I know that I don't.

But you are dead on about the sweetspot. Missing it give huge penalties!

Thomas:

I bought a Driver-3-5 set of Louisville Golf persimmon woods on eBay as
an experiment last year. I still have the 3 & 5 Woods in my bag but
opted for a modern driver as the 40 yards I lost with a persimmon
driver was too much to ignore.

Good luck to you.

40 yards? Why?

Thank you very much.
I think I`ll go for a persimmon driver on ebay. If I don`t like them to
play, or I`am unable to ;-),
I`ll put them by the fireside to show.

How true. I think the most satisfying golf purchase I ever made was a
used set of
Powerbilt Citation persimmon woods, about 1980. What a beautiful sound
they made when you hit them solid, and what a beautiful club. My new
Fusion driver, though I hit it farther than the persimmons, even though
I am in my 60's, makes an ugly tink sound. Sigh.

In the early to mid '80s, maybe a little before.

I haven't seen any, but apparently they are still made:

They can be found on eBay. I miss the way they feel/sound. I don't miss
them enough to play with them, though :-)
