I used to remember going in and getting some "90" compression maxfli's or
Titleists before a round. Now I never see a "compression" rating . I have
been reading about the lower compression balls and am considering trying
them. The "noodle" or the "mojo" or Nike power soft, all seem good. I'm
around a 18-20 handicap and from all I read, these balls make sense to play
for my skill level. I really like a ball with "feel". I used to play the
Maxflie MD 90's (in the late 90's), and they just felt good when you hit a
good shot. I mean, I could tell from the feel, without even looking up that
I had hit a good one. I haven't been able to find a ball since that one
with this quality. Anybody using the lower compressions with any luck? I'm
not proud. If these cheaper, lower compression balls will help my game, I'll
buy out the store! thanks
Scott

I generally agree, but some of todays high end balls are designed to
have low spin off the driver (that helps a high handicapper in several
ways) and higher spin off the wedges (which could also benefit some
high handicappers). But there are probably some lower cost balls that
come close as well and given that some high handicappers will lose a
lot of balls... that may be the ster choice if money is a concern.

In the old days, the common wisdom was that only pros with their
higher swing speed could get a distance benefit out of playing
"100 compression" balls. So, of course, that's what every hack
had to buy.

The irony was that many, maybe most, pros played balata balls,
about the softest balls you can find, because they liked the
feel and spin. It didn't really matter to them that they had to
replace them every other hole because they got them free.
But the hackers didn't like balata because there was too much
spin which caused the slice to be worse, and they gave up
about a club of distance.

With the switch to the newer technology balls, it was possible to
have great distance and soft feel, and lower spin off the driver,
_and_ adequate spin off the irons. The best of all worlds.

I've heard that some of the modern balls are the equivalent
of "60 compression". No self-respecting MAN would use
such a senior/ladies ball, especially if he has been conditioned
to think that he needs to hit a 100 compression ball like
the pros.

So the ball manufacturers quit keting "compression" for
the new balls, for obvious reasons.

Just pick any ball you like. At your handicap level, it might
make some sense to pick a ball which has the word "straight"
somewhere on the package. I personally like the word
"urethane".

I would udderly disagree, if your a new player or have a slower swing speed
then a high end ball (pro v1 or nike one) could have too much compression
and the 3 piece cover, which allows more "playability" isn't really
necessary at that handicap level.

Scott, if your ball compression was any lower, they'd be ovaries.

it's not so much what you hit, as it is to where / how you strike it on
the club face, that gives you the feeling of a good / bad sensation,
maybe.

I'm not proud either, I play the Precept MC Lady. I get great distance with
the driver and reasonable spin with approach shots and they definitely feel
better than the so-called distance balls. They are very durable and VERY
CHEAP. Someone always has them on sale for $10 or less. I have bought them
as cheaply as $7.50 at the local Sports Authority.

I play the Srixon AD333. Nice and soft, but good distance off the tee,
as well.
