What the hell does that mean? I was shooting my usual crap game today... topping out, slicing, getting disgusted. Then on 9 I figured out I wasnt hitting enough BEHIND the ball & getting that pop shot. I dropped 4 balls in pretty thick rough & nailed 4 good shots in a row. Needless to say, I think I figured out something. Also signed up for my 1st lesson next week. Tired of hacking!

It means the clubhead has not yet reached the bottom of its arc when it makes contact with the ball. Contrary to what many people think, the main benefit of this is that it gives you the most gin for error when hitting balls off the turf. > I was shooting my usual crap game > today... topping out, slicing, getting disgusted. Sounds like you just got lucky because there was plenty of fluff behind the ball that wasn't dirt (loose grass). Not a good idea to ever hit behind the ball (except from a bunker, etc.)

"I remember what I was thinking after I hit the good shot, but I can't remember what I was thinking before and during." : -) I used to live near Charles and saw him on him on the driving range. I think maybe he's setting people up with his public swing, maybe.

Once the clubhead passes your hands, it has to be travelling back up.

Try looking at the front of the golf ball when swinging so you will bottom out the swing at the front of it. F My biggest swing weakness is hitting fat - but when I am hitting well, I can avoid hitting fat by having proper movement with my hips.

It might really help you to practice hitting woods and irons from a tee for a while. So many people seem to have the same problem about fat shots and it affects their swings before they develop and through years later. If I could just follow my own advice.

It means that the clubhead is still moving down toward the ground when you make contact. This is typical for good iron players. Some even hit down with FW woods, although not as steep. Hitting down helps with hitting the ball BEFORE hitting the ground. That's why the divot will come after the ball. This will launch the ball higher because more backspin is being applied to the ball. The ball will also stop quicker on the green because it has more backspin. The shorter the club, the "steeper" the attack on the ball. IOW, the radius of the arc is smaller with a shorter club. This means that your divot will generally be deeper with a shorter club.

The ball does not get trapped. When you hit a golf ball the club face always makes contact with the lower half of the ball (in a good shot). It's a common misconception. I've been wrong so many times before on what I thought was a sure thing, though. This, I'm sure of, though. The loft of the club slide under the ball somewhat. That doesn't mean you should hit up. The club itself goes downward but the clubface catches the ball on an upward angle. There is no trapping though.
