I was overwhellmed @ 1st. I started playing last yr & kinda hit a wall
this yr, couldnt figure it out. So the 1st thing I was doing was NOT
planting my L foot, it was rotating out 45 degrees. The L front leg was
not straight @ finish either. The grip was minor - slightly stronger.
My stance was slightly outer shoulder - I narrowed it closer. And more
hip turn initially on the downswing. Sounds like alot..... but
digesable. I kinda knew it was my footing just causing inconsistant
results. I'm very happy w/ what she found. I think fundimentals are
just that. I was self taught - guess I missed a bit.

There's payoff at the end if you keep it up. You need to make a
decision, do you want to just be tweaked and slightly improve, or be
torn down, work hard, and vastly improve.

I chose the latter probably 8 years ago. I was an 11-12 for many
years, got down to an 8, now a 4.4. However, I LIKE practicing (except
putting).

I happen to have a couple of family members who are pros. I went to my
bro-in-law for about 5 years (maybe 7 or 8 lessons a year, mostly at
the start of the season). The first 3 years we worked on *posture* as
the very first thing. Amazing how the basics can go to hell, which
explains why you need to keep reinforcing everything. It can take a
while for it to stick.

And? If the guy has a crappy grip and is moving his feet and hips like
Elvis, he should change everything.

Sounds like he needed an overhaul but it's generally best done in smaller
bites.

Fix one thing and give the fella at least a week of hitting balls at the
range or in the net and then come back in a week. With the first item
ingrained and somewhat natural, move onto the next item and give him another
week. Rinse and repeat.

Of course your game will suck for weeks or months until the whole thing
comes together, is comfortable, and he no longer has to think about the
mechanics and can simply visualize the shot and hit the ball.

That doesn't sound like the optimal solution. Lots of "fixes" are to
compensate for poor fundamentals. Don't work on one fix at a time
before fixing the fundamentals.

I disagree.

Start from the ground up and work on one thing at a time.

There has to be practice and ingrain time between each step.

You throw it all on him at once and a lot of practice time will be wasted.

IMO, if you are new to the game, you learn one step at a time. Having a
lot thrown at you at one time can be a lot.

I've taken lessons in the past and have had 3 or 4 small changes thrown
my way in the course of the lesson and that was plenty.

So fundamentals have to wait until we have a "fix" for that wicked
slice?

No.

When you start from the ground up, I am referring to fundamental changes.

Quick fixes are fine when you are out on the course "playing" and you need
something to compensate and get through the round.

Changing fundamentals for long term improvement is a whole different animal.
You can not change multiple fundamentals at one time.

Some items to consider:

ALWAYS seperate your practice from your play

ALWAYS focus on one item during practice

ALWAYS exaggerate the item being changed

Professional instruction, video, and hard self examination can help to
evaluate progress and comfort. In practice, refine your error analysis.

Forget all of this when you play. Visualize and hit the shot.

At least you will have a better understanding of what is going on when
it happens.

A competent instructor looks where his student "is" before offering
advice/correction.

Dirt is obviously pretty rank and has nowhere to go but up... or
down... depending on your criteria.

You have to expect to get worse after a lesson that changes so much before
you get better. If you had to change that much, there were many unconscious
compensations you were making to keep your game where it was. Fix some of
the problems and you have to unlearn the compensations. It takes some time
and lots of practice.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Yeah, well just wait until you try to take it to the course. You
haven't felt real pain yet. :-)

Look at the bright side...

When you go for lessons in 5 years... you won't have to re-build everything.

The sooner you get started...

I look at people playing black jack, making the obvious wrong moves,
wondering why they're losing so badly...

Might as well learn to do it properly. Congrats on your decision to get
your lesson.

If you were a very raw beginner then I would not be concerned that you had a
lot to learn. If you have been playing for a while and an instructor gives
you that much to work on,........ beware. You can only digest so much at one
time. 2 to 3 things to try and "change" about a swing is enough. Lesson,
practice, practice some more, lesson.....

Anyone can point out why your swing is different than Ernie Els, but a could
teacher can help you play better without trying to change too much, too
soon.

The harder thing for a player to accept is effective advice to tear
down that which will stop the player from getting as good as he can
later.

Depends what you call "fun". I like it. Gives me a "mission". And that
mission makes more sense than going to the course and thinking "I hope I
score better than I deserve to today".

Interesting. What was your handicap "before" your lesson. Sounds like you
got an instructor that wants you to change everything instead of working
with what you already have. I can imagine what he would want to do with Jim
Dent.
