I love the game but I really have little intrest in international play.
Tiger seems to stink unless there's a big purse.

I'm not interested in the international aspect - but I love team golf.
It's fun to play and it's fun to watch, as we work out strategies for
the team.

It's also great to see them play the various match play competitions instead
of another boring stroke play event. In so many stroke play events, it
seems to be more about not losing by having a brain cramp than about
winning. The beauty of match play is the worst thing you can do with a
brain cramp is lose a hole, and in best ball even that often doesn't matter,
so you see more competitions stay close and interesting.

Does this apply to all sports? Maybe it's because the main US team
sports aren't really played internationally. In the UK, the major team
games are football, rugby and cricket. The ultimate in any of these
sports is international team competition, so perhaps we are naturally
more inclined to be interested in the Ryder Cup.

ESPN had a poll asking reader whether they cared about the Ryder Cup.
25% said they cared, 75% didn't.

Yes, but this is from the channel that thinks the X Games constitute
real and interesting sport. Also, they don't have the TV rights to it.

Consider the source.

Self-selecting polls may be invalid as far as scientific data is
concerned, but they are not worthless. In fact, those polls tell you
the opinions of the people that have chosen to respond to the poll.

Sure, self-selecting polls are very invalid if you try to use the
results to represent a national consensus. For example, if Money
magazine had a poll on whether you are saving for retirement. But if
you apply the results to represent the opinions of Money magazine
readers, then wouldn't it be fairly in line with a scientific poll of
Money magazine readers? To say that self-selecting polls are worthless
would be mean that the self-selecting poll has zero or little
correlation with a scientific poll.

I tried to search for any studies comparing self-selecting polls to
scientific ones, but I could not any. I would be interested to see some
experiments.

You clearly have too much time on your hands :-)

Obviously, ESPN.com poll's are not scientific, but I think they are
pretty indicative of the overall U.S. sports fans. Whether ESPN.com
promotes X Games as a sport does not have any relevance to how readers
respond to a poll on the front page about golf. I think 25% of American
sports fans caring about Ryder Cup is a pretty reasonable number.

If ESPN's polls by your own admission are not scientific then how can you
argue they are "indicative of the overall U.S. sports fans?" It is axiomatic
that self-selecting polls are worthless. What ESPN is actually doing is
measuring the size of their audiences. They care about nothing other than
the total number of responses.

And yet ---- here you are talking about them.
