Miss Wie turns 17 today.

Tomorrow she plays at Samsung. (pairings not out yet, that I can find.)
I'll be there Friday and Saturday - too bad my girlfriend Grace Park didn't
make the field this year.

Hopefully Michelle's game is back after being a mess last month.

Dude, when Michelle is in the field, she IS the headliner!

Pretty decent final 4 twosomes .....

Gulbis / Creamer
Wie / Kerr
Pak/ Webb
Ochoa / Sorenstam

Which group would YOU follow?

I recall Natalie & Paula were paired together when I saw this event a year
ago. Surprisingly, their gallery was pretty small. But what was really
interesting was that the group just ahead of them was Rosie Jones'. *Very*
different galleries.

I'm going out to Bighorn tomorrow, and I'll probably do my usual - grab the
first pairing on the first fairway, and follow each group for a couple of
holes as they come through. (Last year, the two members of Birdie Kim's
gallery at the first green were her coach and me.) Some of the holes at
Bighorn are almost "spectator hostile", so I'll need to plan around that, as
well as preparing for the hordes that follow Michelle and (to a lesser
extent) Annika.

Article in this morning's LA Times about the LPGA's dilemma with the
sponsors promoting the event with big billboards showing no one but
Michelle.

Wow, she's that old already? Seems like she was just 14 yesterday.

Now she has absolutely no more excuses. If I recall correctly,
youngsters like Aree Song, Paula Creamer, and Morgan Pressel all
finished #2 or #3 in LPGA majors when they were 17, so for Wie to do so
now is not impressive. She needs to win a major, or at least a
tournament. Is she going to apply for exemption to join LPGA tour? I
believe the others have already set the precedent of joining the LPGA
tour at 17.

Well yeah, but MW already did that at 14, 15 and 16. To date in majors she's
had a second, three thirds, a fourth and a fifth.

Creamer had a third while she was 18, and Song a second a couple weeks
before her 18th birthday. Pressel's second at Cherry Hill last year at 17
was her first top ten in a major.

As far as I know, Wie isn't making excuses about her record. That's mostly
coming from fans who have an emotional investment of some sort. I'll be
happy enough to enjoy watching her play and let things fall where they may.

An LA Times article this morning (Thursday) says the LPGA commissioner
said they would welcome Wie, but the article then went on to say that as
of now Wie doesn't really want to join. [yet?]

As they're playing right now I see Fannie on Wie's bag, and the
commentators are saying Michelle and her father have been having
discussions with Fannie. Things to come?

I asked Tom Bonk (article's author) about that last comment. Haven't heard
from him yet, but I may see him at Bighorn tomorrow or Saturday.

Pairings are at LPGA.com She's a few groups behind the headliners, and
there's only twenty in the field. It's televised on 4 P.M. EST.

Oh, don't you get what the problem is, Wie dasn't win, or Norman will
say she's ruining the game of golf.

He would have won all those majors himself, but he didn't want to ruin
the game, don't you know.

I think her headliner is wearing a bit thin by now, don't you think? I
see you have her third off, that's pretty high for what she deserves.

I would follow Gulbis and Creamer for starters. Maybe all the way.
They really do look nice. They're very athletic. They really do look
nice. They really do look nice.

I would follow Ochoa some to see her put the final coffin nails into
Webb, Sorenstam, and Kerr.

Yeah, it was extremely impressive for Wie to accomplish that from 14-16
because no one else had before. I'm just saying no one will be
impressed with second place finishes anymore now that she's 17 because
several others have accomplished quite a bit at age 17.

> As far as I know, Wie isn't making excuses about her record.

She hasn't made any excuses, but the current excuse (used by fans and
media) for her lack of wins is that since she is not an LPGA member,
she cannot play more than 8 (?) LPGA tournaments a year, which is why
she plays all those PGA events. I'd like to see her file for an
exception, become a member, play a full-time LPGA schedule, and kick
some butt on the tour.

I guess we'll see what happens - I wouldn't be surprised if there's some
sort of "Michelle Wie Rule" put in place that would allow her to play more
often without full membership. (Kinda like the USGA came up with the
Michelle Wie Rule that gave amateurs more flexibility to accept outside
assistance, then she turned pro and it became irrelevant.)

As for the excuses - in a world-wide audience, you'll always find the fringe
elements who will make excuses for their heroes. Hopefully, the numbers
remain small.

Just a note this weekend for the Michelle-oglers - her pattern seems to be
to wear her "sexier" outfits on Saturday, and her more "professional" ones
on Sunday. Th & F seem to often be the "junior-golf-like" outfits.

Yes, I'm torn between my natural attraction to Asian women, and my
natural repulsion from crazy women. Malkin is a female Ann Coulter.
