I thought about this last week, Most of the times i go out I wear sunglasses, but after thinking about it I can't recall seeing a single pro player wearing sunglasses. is it not allowed (not by rules of golf, but by the PGA?) or is it believed to be a handicap in their game (sort of why tennis players don't wear sunglses, although a tennis ball is moving at 100 MPH or more, and a golfball is standing still) any ideas? of you guys (and gals) out there, how many of you wear sunglasses when you play?

Some players wear shades, though I can't recall all their names. But Robert Allenby and Robert Gamez are two who come immediately to mind. I think Robert Allenby also has some sort of problem with wind making his eyes water. Peter Lonard has worn sunglasses for a long time after some eye sensitivity acquired from a bout of Ross River Fever. Given the long-term damage UV can do to eyes, I surprised every players doesn't wear sunglasses. They spend a lot of time outdoors. -- Cheers Colin Wilson ------------------------------------------------------------------ Trentham Golf Club: http://www.trenthamgolf.com Barnbougle Dunes: http://publishing.kyneton.net.au/barnbougle ------------------------------------------------------------------

Lenses that adjust automatically for bright light have, for me at least, obviated any need for sunglasses. Furthermore, there is no change in vision because of different lenses or other issues dealing with sunglass opaque properties.

Duval's sunglasses are famous. DiMarco always takes off his sunglasses and turns them around on the back of his head before swinging. Several players promote their brand's sunglasses. I wear them.

Several pros have worn them, most notably David Duval. I wear photogays since my optometrist told me I was starting to get cataracts, and sun exposure heightens the risk for getting them. So I'd advise younger guys to wear them, if they play a lot of golf.

My regular glasses are bifocals, my sunglasses are not. I have a hard time playing in the regular glasses, the sunglasses are great. I think the other posters have pointed out some PGA golfers who wear them, so it's clearly not a rule issue.

Off the top of my head, I can think of Mediate, Duval, Mahan, Jobe, Andrade, theres a bunch that wear sunglasses. I've never seen Woods, Els, Furyk or any of the top 10 guys wear them though. I personally do not wear them.

I believe Roco Mediate(sp?) wears them all the time. I usually wear them to the course and for the first hole or two but they usually come off. I have the wrap around ones and they tend to fog up a bit when its hot out. I find it easier to read greens without sunglasses as well.

Didn't / Doesn't Duval wear sunglasses? Duval has said that he wears sunglasses for a sensitivity to pollen more than for shade. I don't know about the others. Anybody who spends a lot of time in bright sunlight should wear sunglasses for prevention of cataracts. That being said, the average off the shelf sunglasses can tend to distort vision in a minor way which can tend to disrupt putting. I have worn the same brand and style of sunglasses for so long that I have apparently compensated for whatever distortion the glasses may cause. (In other words, I am an equally lousy putter with or without the shades.) I recently won a pair of Callaway sunglasses at a tournament. They retail at about $160. I absolutely love them as they actually seem to sharpen my vision. I don't use them much for golf as I don't want to grow accustomed to them and have to shell out $160 when I break them.

Reminds me of some of the beautiful wedding gifts (dinner plates, silver, dinner linens, really nice stuff) my wife and I received in 1958. They were too nice to use everyday, so we closeted them until the occasion with guests justified using them. 20 years later when reorganizing our closets we found these beautiful things totally unused and still sitting there. I guess we weren't sufficiently important to use good stuff for ourselves.
