So you get off the par train in the wrong direction (double on 11), and
follow it up with an eagle?

Does the LPGA keep a stat for "super-bounce-back"?

They added two shots to her score to make it interesting. She's that
damned good!

Actually, there was some confusion about her score on #14. She whiffed
one shot and made 8. When I made my earlier post they showed her with
a 7 on that hole. From the post-round interview it is apparent that
they didn't know she made a quad until she told them.

Starting her second year as a pro, Wie took a half-hour to play the
14th hole at Bighorn with two rulings, a whiff, an unplayable lie from
a desert bush and a shot off the cement cart path just to get back to
the fairway. She wound up with a quadruple-bogey 8 on the shortest par
4 at Bighorn, sending her to a 2-over 74.

Didn't see what happened on 14 -- what happened?

The bright side is finishing even despite a +2 and a +3 in your round.
The down side is that Lorena and Annika are en fuego!

Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of her bouncing. The only good
thing about 14 was that it didn't happen during a men's event.

What happened? Penalty, or just serious screwup? I wasn't taping.

If I recall correctly, 14 is a fairly easy hole.

Serious screwup(s), including a whiff, *and* a penalty (unplayable
lie), for an 8. But the worst was how long it took. She kept waiting
for an official, and then, incredibly, waiting for the wind to move
some branches out of her way. It took her nearly an hour to play the
hole.

So THAT'S why my last round of golf took 6 hours.

That's weird, Kerr was up on the green out of view during all the drops
and the whif. What I saw last night on TGC was:

Tee shot to cart path (tee shot not shown), what was shown was lots of
milling about with ball on path and official pointing to nearest relief
on the hillside.

The drop (and/or drops and/or placement) not shown. When the TV came
back Michelle was either making a practice stroke or whiffing. My
initial reaction was that she was attempting to hit the ball but the
announcers didn't say anything so i thought it was a practice swing.

Then she stepped back for a moment and waited for the wind to blow the
branches away. It looked like a willow or similar type tree. It was
nowhere near a two minute wait, but she did wait a few seconds for the
wind to blow the branches back.

She took another stroke and you couldn't see the ball but you could
hear it bounce on the path and then they showed it right next to a bush
on the far side of the cart path. She took an unplayable, dropped on
the cart path, played her 5th off the path to the fairway (Kerr was up
at the green during all this), her 6th on and two putted.

I think Michelle has a been a victim of extremely bad management, from
pros and parents. Had she played and earned her way and showed us how
good she is against the women, she would've gotten the respect she does
not have. She comes across as a dippy teen who can play golf. I don't
think she'll ever lose the image she has created.

I presume that there were a couple of penalty strokes in there for
(what appears from this description to be) a very clear-cut breach of
6-7? If not, it would be sad to see a deliberate action that breaches a
rule going unpunished, and the player benefitting from not playing by
that rule.

According to the Associated Press, it was Kerr who corrected the score on
that hole.

------------------
In the scoring tent, there was confusion over the score until Cristie Kerr
took over and went through all eight strokes. "Ocho," she said. The
walking scorer said, "I thought she got free relief from the bush because
of bees."

"No," Wie said. "That was last year."

Waiting for the official is fine. It's expected. But, on the same hole
after the long rules discussion, to then wait around for the wind to
improve your chances is probably a little over the top, even if it was
only for a minute or two. Out of consideration for everyone else, she
should have played her shot the moment the rules had been satisfied.

By the way, did I hear right when one of the golf channel announcers
remarked on people booing Michelle at some of the holes?

Every tournament, she plays a little more like me. Just a few more
ignorable holes per round and she'll be there.

Of course she waited for an official. Why make your own decision and be
disqualified the next day for doing it wrong? Thanks George Bamberger!

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between
two golfers neither of whom can putt very well.
