Subject: Winter rules in August?
|
Club championship was this past weekend. It was 36-hole stroke play event. The club pro sets the rules. He opted for a winter rules pick clean and place with in 12 inches rule only in the fairway. I am an 18 handicapper was flabbergasted. We had been playing as it lies since April. In his defense, he indicated that because of high temperatures there are some dead brown grass spots in the fairways. Fairways are watered nightly. I estimated 20% brown spots in some places. Grass length between dead spots and green fairway is close to even. I tend to play more out of the rough and feel that the rule is an advantage to my straighter friends who spend more time in the fairway. Does this rule give an advantage to some players over others?

So the Pro covers his ass by making it lift/clean/cheat for everyone. That saves him the trouble of having to confront the "rollers" with penalties and/or a DQ. Tex

I played a course in Va. - Westpark, just because it was on the way to work for my son-in-law, and it was often impossible to get a decent lie in the fairway, even with 12". You were better off in the rough, unless you like hitting off hardpan. By the way, it's not called winter rules in the summer. :-)

You should get a good lie in the fairway anyway and since they are already in the fairway no player should benefit from the 12 inch movement. Watch for that in tournies where you can move them anywhere. Amazing how much 12 inches can make when around trees or difficult angles to the hole. Shouldn't the guy in the fairway have an advantage over those who hit in the rough. I like to play them down and if the course is in good shape have no trouble with it. I play at a place where it's impossible to play them down. Bad enough we have to do it from the rough.
