Too bad a photographic eye and the saturation tool in photoshop don't make a person rational or intelligent. He's not a flaming liberal, he's a flaming idiot. Politics is equal opportunity. Bad grammar coupled with insults to another's intelligence doesn't have the impact that one intends, does it? Based on the many things he has written here, and supposing that I had any desire to focus particularly on him, I might say many things about Bret (I assume he doesn't mind the use of his given name, since he leaves enough clues behind for us to surmise it). I do believe he and I would very strongly disagree on several things. However, I also suspect that I would very much enjoy conversing with him were I to spend any time with him in the real world. He comes across as a person who has given the world around him more than just a cursory glance, and I very much enjoy the company of someone who tends to look a little deeper than the facade this world and the people in it present us. Of all the things I might say about Bret (or 'annika1980', if he prefers that moniker), one of them would not be to suggest that he is an idiot, let alone say so in such an emphatic way as you have. He does appear to be a 'liberal', as those of us in America are prone to misapply that term. But I have never taken that per se as an indication that someone is feebleminded. I've often found it ironic that so many people automatically label those that disagree with them as morons. I have to say that, among other things, Bret's impeccable command of language - rough as it may sometimes be - tends to indicate that he enjoys an above average intelligence, his political leanings notwithstanding. I must admit that I haven't been paying very close attention, but I don't recall that he has ever blundered so badly as to use run-on sentences or fragments, for example. I don't mean to suggest that such rudimentary errors would indicate that someone was a fucking imbecile, but rather that their absence begins to suggest otherwise. As to the photograph itself, I don't give a damn whether a mastery of the art of photography says anything about the master's intelligence or not. That is a damn fine photograph, and I very much appreciate the artist sharing his work with us. If he happens to be an idiot, then that is only more evidence that intelligence is a tricky bank of pigeon holes. Incidentally, thank you for sharing your political views with us, if only tangentially. Always remember that, though politics is equal opportunity, idiocy is not. Scott

On the one side I would suggest Annika 1980, R&B, Bobby Knight, multi, Carbon, William T Clarke in no particular order. On the other we have Larry and his ilk, ranked in a very particular order. Apologies to those I have omitted to mention by name, such as Tex, Dene,Greg, MnMikew and Joe. Alan.

Glad I quit reading already; I know I'm dealing with a half-wit when the word grammar is in the first sentence. It must be a really pathetic existence when you have read so much off-topic crap on this golf newsgroup that you can assess and compare what's been written. It's like being proud of your report of a bunch of pop-up books. I find it very telling that so many here will cry, whine, and complain about how slow play is on their favorite course, but then clutter a golf newsgroup with off-topic discussion. Dave

You don't teach pilots by dropping them in F-15's to learn basic stick an rudder stuff. Equipment matters, but equipment can be too good for the operator. One can hit a bad shot with anything. One can hit a bad shot worse with equipment that is "too good" for the operator. There's some photo columnist somewhere advocating that "beginners" get a cheap digital camera and take ALOT of pictures. The point is to learn the limits of what they have, and to understand light and color within a narrow range of possibilities. Once they have understandings of light, color, balance, focus, and heck maybe even composition, then they can understand a piece of equipment which can extend those limits far beyond their $100 digital 2 megapixel camera. I suspect one can make a similar case for golf equipment. More than one has suggested not putting a driver in the hands of beginners but limiting them to say a 5 iron and down. Keep the ball "in play" so that they can learn basic shots and course management. Then they can start adding longer clubs, more wedges, and "hotter" shafts. By the way Brett, you're killing this displaced yankee in Florida with your fall color pictures. I miss fall and winter the most down here in the land of early summer, summer, hot summer, and late summer.

You should play golf with me sometime. Then you'd really hear me master some language. As for being a Liberal, that doesn't seem to come up much on the golf course. Very few of the guys I play with (like Bill-o, Sparky, retiredusarmy, etc.) would call themselves Liberal. In fact, most of them are bent the other way. When we play golf we have a lot more to worry about than politics. In fact, I've been terribly interested in the upcoming elections, particularly our TN Senate race between Harold Ford Jr. and Bob Corker. Harold Ford spends most of his time talking about the issues while Bob Corker doesn't have much to say except to slam Harold Ford. You might have seen some of the controversial ads the RNC ran on behalf of Corker, full of lies, innuendo and racism. It's really heated up showing just how low politicians will go. The latest ad has Rep. Zach Wamp, who I know and have played golf with, talking about both candidates who are both friends of his. He says, "They are both good men, but Bob Corker is 'one of us' who shares our Tennessee values." "One of us.." The implication is "white guy." I suppose that if Tennessee values means living in a 31-room mansion then the millionaire Bob Corker is "one of us." But at the end of the day I realize that very little will change no matter who gets elected. And that's the sad part. It's almost like rooting for your favorite football team. Does you life really change whether they win or lose (unless you are betting on them)? But I digress. Let's get back to the foilage. http://www.pbase.com/bret/image/69517259

One thing we don't have in Australia. But winter is not just around the corner here, summer is. That means morning and evening light on the eucalypts and dry landscape ... our only answer to your colourful fall forests, albeit a subtle one. Hey, it's raining here today. But only a few millimetres and it'll be gone. BTW, I'm looking for a good SLR camera, particularly for landscapes and course shots. Is the Canon EOS400D any good? Seems remarkably priced, but I've heard negative things about the "standard" (twin) lens kit. -- Cheers Colin Wilson ------------------------------------------------------------------ Trentham Golf Club: http://www.trenthamgolf.com Barnbougle Dunes: http://publishing.kyneton.net.au/barnbougle ------------------------------------------------------------------

But I'd like to think that some of it is the person holding it. "Now if you don't mind, I'll demonstrate." A photographer went to a friend's house for dinner. Before dinner he showed some of his recent work to his friend and his friend's wife. The wife remarked, "Those are some terrific photographs! You must have a very good camera." They all then sat down to a lovely dinner that the wife had prepared. After finishing off his dessert the photographer complimented the cook. "That, my dear, was as fine a meal as I've had in years. You must have some terrific pots and pans." As they say in golf, "It ain't the arrow, it's the Indian." Having said that, equipment DOES matter, whether in golf or photography. Lesser equipment will tend to limit you in some way. My golf equipment is such that any further improvement will have to come from me. My photo gear is certainly better than most, but I often lust for even better gear that would let me make even better pics. But for right now, I'll have to do what I can with what I got.

Yeah, it's really beautiful right now. Plus, the greens have come back. They were in horrible shape only about 2 months ago (they'd lost them to some fungal infection earlier this year). Randy

But it will hold you over until you can get some better glass. The cheapo 50mm f/1.8 is under a $100US and is excellent. For wide angle stuff look at the 17-40L f/4.

It took them to 2006 to figure out that "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" wasn't a compliment for a college football game. > I'm lucky to live in one of the most beautiful spots in the US, > especially this time of year. But I lived (existed) in Manchester,TN for 2.5 years. Beautiful country, but the middle of Buck Snort (Okay, about as far east of Nashville as Buck Snort is west). I wouldn't go back there on a bet. Northern Va, Maryland, Southeastern PA is probably more my style. Good latitude for having 4 solid seasons a year. Do wonder where I'd golf though considering what I hear about the crowded courses up that way.
