In the Baptist Campus Ministry tournament today, a four man team shot a 53.
Second place was 60. My team of four strangers had a 65. It would have
been nice to watch that foursome make 2 eagles, 1 par and 15 birdies. I
did not know any of them, but it is hard to imagine someone cheating to win
a huge 50 dollar gift certificate to the pro shop. They got back their
entry of 50 cash to get a shop certificate. Course played at 6725 today.

I gotta agree, I've played in a few scrambles this year (my firt tourneys)
and they are a HELL of a lot of fun. but I always find the winning scores
are pretty much impossible. the last one I played in, the winning team shot
12 under. which was far and away better than any other teams. for some
reason at these type of tournies people always cheat. I'm by no means a good
golfer we shot a 3 over and reported it as such. I don't understand why
people must cheat in a tourney, guess people just get way too competitive,
regardless of what sort of prize is up for grabs.

Slow down there Dr Nick, if a foursome has decent golfers and most
importantly good short game/putters, 12 under is not hard. I have played in
scrambles where we have been 13 under (no cheating) (and still lost) and we
are not scratch golfers.

I played a scramble with three of my golfing buddies a few years
back. The course happened to me my home course when I was in the
military and played lots of rounds of golf there.

Before we teed it up, one of my partners asked if 13 under would be
good enough to win. I told him that we had to go at least 15 under to
have a shot and he laughed thinking I was joking.

Well, my game had gone to shit, due to a case of the s---ks that I
was having a hard time getting rid of. My putting, however, was a
strong as it had ever been. Coupled with the fact that I knew these
greens as well as anyone, we went out and shot 17 under. There was 1
eagle, 15 birdies and two pars. I holed nine putts in a row with the
length of putts ranging from 8 feet to 30 feet.

There was no cheating involved. Our very first hole was a short,
but tricky par 4. One of the players in our group hit it to 4 feet
and I somehow managed to hit one staright and put it about 18 inches
from the cup. We were off and running after that.

Meant to say the first hole we played was a short par 3, not a par
4. I also forgot to mention that the second place team shot -15
under.

That's ridiculous, but the prize isn't worth getting upset about. The
best score ever shot in the Buick Scramble gross at our course, about
the same length is 10 under. That's
with 2 eagles on the par 5's. And with the club champ playing in the
foursome, who has
the course record of 64. We lost a scramble two years in a row to one
team, who always
finished their round last. The last year we played we told them on the
14th that our score was 61, and of course, they came in with a 60. We
actually shot 59. Different course, par 70. So, yes, people do cheat.
No idea why.

Maybe they didn't understand the rules. I mean the rules of God,
not of the USGA.

My wife and I play in a fund raising outing every year, and used to be in
the winning group once in a while at about -9. (One year felt kind of
unfair because they played it on my home course and we were much more
familiar with it than anyone else. I talked the group into playing a couple
of drives nobody else wanted to because I knew I could get the ball onto the
green and close, and fortunately delivered on that.) In recent years
there's always one group at least 15 under. After wondering for a couple of
years I finally found out the answer. The outing raises money for a college
program on public administration, so the participants are mainly alumni, who
are city managers, park superintendants, etc. One happens to be the park
superintendent for a good sized city with half a dozen public public
courses. She is a pretty good golfer (we were playing with her one year we
won), but in recent years she has recruited 3 of the course pros to play in
the outing, so it's understandable why they finish first. In this case
there's really no foul -- the prize for winning every year is just something
silly (one year we got tee shirts from some liquor brand with giant toungs
on them) but there are a lot of nice prizes given out in a raffle, and a
significant fraction of those comes from the pro shops on her courses.
Actually it was much better to win last place as we did a year ago (rainy
horrible day and I was only a week out of the hospital recovering from a bad
leg) -- that got us a bottle of wine.

That is pretty strong. I played in a United Way one in NC this week,
and we were 12 under, but we each had 2 mulligan's....

Our course isn't that long (6200) or all that difficult (slope around
121). I've got a scramble team that's been playing together for years.
We aren't that strong... 10ish, 16, and a couple 20's but we have shot
13 once (won the third flight with a better score than the second
flight) and shot 11 or 12 a couple other times winning the 3rd flight
one of those. The winnig scores for the first flight is anywhere from
15-18 under every year.

I played in one scramble at another course in town and 4 guys with a
cumulative team handicap of about 8 scorched the course at 21 under
after giving one back with a -1 team hcp. This is a longer course than
my home course and it's no pushover but we may have had a mulligan or
two each that day. That's still some very good golf.
