So now we know he's got a great golf handicap and from that we can infer
that he could kick just about anyone's ass who posts in this NG.
He's a great musician/composer that has made lots of money and won award
with his musical works.
So that's not good enough for you folks?
I have not seen him on any political ads. Maybe that's the problem.....

Soprano sax is a b-flat horn. Alto is e-flat. John Coltrane, a real
musician, played soprano on occasion and nobody thought it sounded
whiney. Same with Wayne Shorter. No one with any real interest in music
would consider Kenny G. a "great musician/composer." I'd put him in the
same class as Madonna.

Gawd, I hate Madonna, but her stuff has a lot more artistic
merit than Kenny G's. Seriously.

Did he play much soprano with Lorber? Discounting the fact that is
basically pop fusion, I don't mind his playing...maybe my ear isn't all
that great. Kenny G's stuff since?....ugggh. Why isn't this guy
opening for Celine Dion in Vegas? It's really where that kind of
entertainment belongs.
Thought this was a rather interesting find....allegedly via Pat

Can Chris actually play soprano better than KennyG? I haven't heard
Chris so I have no basis for comparison but reasonable doubt creeps into
my mind.
Is KG a great composer? Too soon to tell. If a body of his stuff is
still being played fifty years from now he will probably deserve
"great".
I do know for a fact that Kenny is playing the kind of music he has
always wanted to play, going back into his teens, so it isn't like he
"sold out" to make a ton of money. How do I know that? My son played
tenor to Kenny's soprano in the University of Washington stage band back
in the 70's and they became pretty good friends; exchanging philosophies
and thoughts over beers or Starbucks after performances. Son told me
years ago to keep an eye out for Kenny because he was going to make it
big with his type of music. I've always respected his judgement so I
kept an eye out and, sure enough, KG made it big. Son and Everett Harp
are pretty good friends and he told me about Harp long before he ever
released his first CD; not really my kind of music but the guy is good.
I know for sure that I wouldn't want to take Kenny on for 18 holes at
scratch - I'd get my head handed back to me. Even if he gave me all the
difference between his reported +.6 and my 13 I doubt that I would be
able to handle him For an amateur that is a pretty pure swing he puts
on the ball.

Let me put it this way: I can play "Songbird" (or whatever the
hell his signature tune is called) in tune.
Gorelick did some stuff with Jeff Lorber that is probably
beyond my limited improvisational vocabulary, but his utter
inability to play in tune is a such a huge minus that I'd
rather listen to someone who has my ability than to him.
As I said before, I'm not a great player. I'm fundamentally
sound, rust notwithstanding -- my intonation and timbre are
both solid, and I can play from a book well enough to play
professionally. My improvisation is pretty weak, though, so
I rarely do it anymore (though I still play some).

There's no doubt that he's made it big with his type of music. His
ability to ad lib is very limited, compared to the recognized jazz
artists around. If there was no reference to his being a pure jazz
player there probably wouldn't be any controversy.

FYI, I am a trained classical musician with some 30 years immersion,
including 8 years graduate work in music. I used to adjudicate piano
competitions at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.
I wasn't passing on the professional quality of KG's work: I was commenting
on the joy he gave to me and to tons of others: not the whining or the long
notes: the roller coaster exuberance of the experience. (Do you have even a
passing acquaintance with "joy?"
What am I clueless about, O wise man?
I admire your technique: I think I have seen it referred to as "running in

I don't understand why anybody would lie about Amherst. Are there
people who would be more impressed by hearing you graduated from an
Ivy League college than from Amherst? I doubt it.
Although the concept of lying to tell the truth can happen in real
life. For instance the Showtime TV show _Deadwood_ shows how foul
languaged they were by using modern foul language - instead of the
foul language of the time, which is now amusing.

Well Georgie Boy, I have two degrees in music and played
professionally for thirty-five years at the top level of music, in the
studios. The web site that Sparky mentioned showed about 1/2 of 1% of
my professional recording background. So much for experience.
Where you're clueless is in missing the point of what has been said
here by many, not just me. KG's giving of joy is fine, but the
sticking point is that he has put himself forward as being a force in
the genre of jazz. That simply isn't so, and your classical training
doesn't give you the slightest qualification in adjudicating that.
I've never run from anyone, especially those who are in over their
heads on a subject that I know well. You never once received an
argument from me about your swing methods...that isn't my strength.
Jazz, popular music and the trombone are.

I think I said that I had 8 years of post graduate studies. It is called
"post" because it comes AFTER college graduation. I did not say that all 8
years were in "an educational institution."
Actually my instructor for the six years of private study would have been
the head of any music department anywhere - or close to it - if he had
chosen such a career. But he was a simple man, one of those people people
refer to as 'saints.' Humility, quiet excellence, fidelity, generosity and
VERY well trained himself. He pointed out to me that my lineage included
Liszt and Beethoven...

graduate study without at least a Master's. That's plenty for a Phd.
Hell, my Master's took less than two years, and yes, at an accredited
university.

Coming in here from left field, been busy for the past few weeks, but...
Perhaps a close analogy would for you to draw a mustache on the Mona
Lisa and with great fanfare and publicity, call it an original "Great
Work of Art".
For the record, I hate the sound of KG's stuff. Besides the whiny, mono
modality that pervades everything, he just plain has no real talent. No
color, no soul, no anything but sound. Unpleasant sound at that.
I am not a musician, I do not play an instrument but I love music and my
tastes are very eclectic. There are a few genre that I don't enjoy but
generally my taste is pretty widespread.

what? That's a stretch, if you'll read that to which you responded.
It doesn't take a jazz musician to understand his shortcomings. Anyone
that can discern intonation can hear them. If you can't, it doesn't
make you a bad person, and if you like his music, that's just finel.
It's difficult to imagine an analogy to his overdubbing on an
Armstrong record. Having LLLarry compare his swing to Ernie Els' in
a video would be one.
As far as sour grapes go; he and I are, nor never were, in the same
genre. I don't give a crap about how much money he makes, that's
fine with me. A lot of no-talents have made millions in the music
business. Fame? Who cares?. Putting himself in the same category of
really great musicians? That's just blasphemy.

When accepting awards/grammys as a pop artist, all you'd hear from me
is "more power to ya..." if people are buying then he deserves it.
He doesn't deserve it in jazz, and that he doesn't say something about
it makes it worse. Though I'll admit the people giving the award are
more at fault for dumbing down the genre.
I think he as a great golf swing, and would not accuse him of a vanity
cap. That he didn't fare well in a nationwide event doesn't make him a
v-capper. There's so many good golfers now, that the tour needs an
overflow and the "other" tours are just that. This past summer there
was a NW event on TGC where they had a playoff that went a few extra
holes, they kept playing 18 over as I recall. I forget the two guys
but they were solid players, to compare KG to guys like that isn't
fair. Those guys would be middle tour players, at least, 30 years ago.

Mostly the show is modern/alternative rock with a sprinkling
of older underappreciated rock and then the occasional curveball

just about whatever we want. :)

My hypothesis was that human nature guarantees that even weak,
inexperienced trolls will be successful. To test this, I needed to
find a thread that had relatively few posts, had a predominant opinion
base, and already had a warning against trolls. The Kenny G jazz
discourse fit the bill.
To troll, I needed a means to offer an opinion counter to the
prevailing position that was simply an opinion that was not an ad
hominem attack (that would come in the second post) and yet was still
provocative.
The oxymoron construct, used in the manner of the citation below from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxymoron, worked perfectly.
"A more subtle rhetorical manoeuvre in designating an expression XY as
an "oxymoron", often used for either humorous or polemical purposes, is
to pick out a perceived or alleged property of objects of type Y,
re-construe that property as if it were a defining criterion of Y, and
then demonstrate that it is contradicted by X. For instance, if one
were to claim that "honest Politician" was an oxymoron, this would
imply the claim that Politicians, by definition, are dishonest."
Even better, "oxymoron" has "moron" in it.
I must admit that trolling was more fun than I thought it would be. At
some level there is a certain satisfaction in getting the exact
expected response to a stimulus. I'll stop.

will enjoy listening to this while eating vanilla soft-serve ice cream
