Subject: Who had "74" in the Luke Donald pool?

Looks like I was closest with my 71 prediction. I was actually being
kind to him, figuring that he'd blow to at least a 75. Nothing against
Donald, but the track record of good players thrown into the final
round of a Major with Tiger ain't that great. I think 4 factors are at
work here:

1. The crowd. Most players have never played in front of such a mob.

2. Pressure. It is the final round of a Major, after all.

3. Fatigue. More mental than physical. Grinding it out in a Major
for 4 days takes it's toll. I knew Geoff Ogilvy would have a letdown on
the weekend for this reason. To Tiger, it's just another round of
golf. He stays in "grind mode" all the time.

4. Pin positions. It's hard to make up ground with the Sunday pin
positions at a Major. Especially when Tiger is leading and in control
of his swing. He'll play for the fat side of the green, take his pars,
birdie a few par-5's and shoot 66-68.

Oops your right, Bob May.

that doesn't explain his pre-muscular days (amateur days when he won
just as easily or even easier....)

I wonder if that is why the only guys anybody can remember giving him a
run are Glen Day and Hal Sutton. Not that either of these guys are
physical specimens but Sutton certainly has never been intimidated by
him, I think he actually won that Players because Tiger was on his
heels, it brought out the best in him. Day was the big swinging dick in
SoCal when Tiger was growing up so there may have been less of the
intimidation factor there. Im sure Day spanked him a few times as a
junior.

There is a 5th factor. Tiger is like so many brilliant sportsmen quite
intimidating. He carries himself like a superior being, like some
ancient God really, walking so meticulously, staring straight ahead,
his powerful arms swinging rhytmically, alone in his magnificent
universe. The other guy feels like some inferior creep who really
shouldn=B4t be there. Some brilliant footballers have this aura, Roy
Keane of Manchester United as an outstanding example. You feel less of
man in their presence and you are doomed to be far from your best. F

You made plenty of sense until you brought up a self-confessed thug as
an example of a superior being.

It wasn't hard to predict that whoever played with Tiger would have a
rough day. What I never expected is that *nobody* made a run at it.
I thought Tiger would need at least three under to win. Turns out he
could have shot even par.

Who better the under on Luke's number of birdies? (ZERO)

Thoughts running through Tiger's playing partners on Sunday:

"I'm not intimidated. I'm not intimidated. I'm not intimidated..."
"Pepto really doesn't work for those things that commercial claims."
"I feel like one of those guys on a Jordan poster that got dunked on."
"Could he just make one f'in bogey!!"
"Maybe that career in accounting wasn't such a bad idea after all."
"I wonder if Tiger likes me."

Thought definitely not running through their minds:

"I am so going to win this tournament."

Phil: "Just let me keep this stupid smile on my face 5 more minutes. It
was supposed to me MY turn. It was supposed to be MY year. I'm gonna use
some imagination on Peltz."

Sergio: "I bet they're showing that stupid shot again on TV from '99. I

highlight reel from today will be me missing a putt with commentary on how
my putting sucks. Oh well, at least I'm good with the ladies."

Mike Weir: "So like, this really sucks. Eh."

Davis Love: "I'm tired of playing in the Ryder Cup anyway."

Luke Donald: "Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit."

Shaun Micheel: "Sweet. Adam Scott just gave me 2nd alone. Daddy needs a
new set of wheels."

Miguel Jimenez: "I don't think anybody even knows I was in the tournament,
let alone made the cut."

Billy Mayfair: "It's all in my mind. They are not all looking at my
crotch."

Jay Haas: "Yes! I'm not in last place!"

Jim Kane: "Jay Haas is such an asshole."

I=B4m not a ManU fan and I agree with you totally, Roy Keane was a
self-confessed thug, but you have to admit that he was intimidating,
and so was another ManU thug, Eric Cantona. I remember well how even
good strikers froze down when standing face to face with Oliver Kahn.
And I witnessed myself how strong chess players almost broke down when
they had to face the troubled genius, Bobby Fischer. Intimidation is a
powerful factor in any sport. When Tiger is on song he is unbeatable.
He is hypnotizing to watch but he is killing the majors. What we sorely
need now is another Great White Shark or a new Ballesteros. F

Last but not least:

Tiger: "I *love* this game!"

---

My other mini-thought was the umbrella incident. What if that was actually
the pay off for a bet (we know Phil can't resist a wager) on Friday's round?
With the kicker being that their bet on the 36 hole match was Phil had to
wear womens underwear on the weekend? It explains everything! Just couldn't
work it into a top 10 list ;-)
