Subject: When did they start pairing golfers by score?

We have guys like Wadkins claiming that Tiger's competition folds on
Sunday, when the old-timers would have stepped up. But we forget that
although the weekend pairings have been assigned by score for the last
few decades, it wasn't always that way. IIRC it was started at the
request of the TV networks, to ensure that the best players would be
on during the broadcast. Before that, the guy in first place might
have played an hour or two before or after the guy in second, so they
didn't have real-time battles like we see today. Does anyone know
exactly when it became standard practice to assign tee times in order
of score, and how they did it before?
