Subject: What's the Penalty?
|
I have three questions that I would appreciate responses to: 1. A multi-day event is two man team match play, with the highest number of cumulative points winning each flight. The flight winners then go on to compete for the overall championship, which is contested (teams playing alternate shot) over four holes. Teams drop out after each hole, so that two teams are left for the final hole. Is the format still match play, or is it stroke play? Or is it whatever the committee says it is? 2. On the final hole of this playoff, Player A tees off. Player B hits into tall grass inbounds. After five minutes of searching has passed, the rules official says, "it's been five minutes". Seconds later, Player A finds the ball, and hits it. Has he hit a "lost ball"? If so, what's the penalty? Loss of hole, or two strokes? 3. If the rules official advises the team that they must replay the lost ball from the previous location, I assume that there is no penalty for relying on what the official said. Q: Is it correct that Player A must hit the next shot? Look forward to any responses, Charles

WOW! Thank you so much for your quick response and citations. It sounds like, then, there would NOT be a disqualfication because the played "wrong ball" was corrected and played from the previous position, and there should be a two-stroke penalty during stroke play. sfb wrote: > 1. 1. If there are multiple teams, then it has to be stroke play. 2. Decision 27/8 Ball Found After Search Exceeding Five Minutes Is Then Played Q. A player searches for his ball for five minutes and does not find it. He continues to search, finds the ball and plays it. What is the ruling? A. The ball was lost and therefore out of play when the five-minute period allowed for search expired - see Definitions of "Ball in Play" and "Lost Ball." When the player played a stroke with a ball out of play, he played a wrong ball - see Definition of "Wrong Ball" - and incurred a penalty of loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play - Rule 15-3. In stroke play, he was disqualified if he did not correct the error by proceeding under Rule 27-1 before playing from the next tee - Rule 15-3b. 3. The official was right about playing the lost ball from the previous location per ROG 27-1 and wrong if he didn't assess a 2 stroke wrong ball penalty per Decision 27/8. Q. ROG 29-1 General In a threesome or a foursome, during any stipulated round the partners must play alternately from the teeing grounds and alternately during the play of each hole. Penalty strokes do not affect the order of play. <charles@hall.net > wrote in message news:1158621702.765953.199580@b28g2000cwb.googlegroups.com... >I have three questions that I would appreciate responses to: > > 1.
