Subject: What next for Duval?

In order to stay fully exempt for next year he has to basically double his winnings thus far - he has made $318k, and needs to be at $630k, which will probably charge northward somewhat before the end of the official season. To hit the conditional mark he needs to rake in another $136k. Assuming he hits neither, which is looking like a safe bet w/ only three official events left (he has played in 23, making the weekend in 11) is he Q-School material? I seriously doubt he's got the game for that at this point. Are we seeing the end of Double D on the big stage? Of course he'll get the occasional sponsors invite/exemption, but this really could be it. Interesting fact - He has made $531,658 in the '03, '04, '05 and '06 seasons combined, and is still 24th on the PGA TOUR all time money list. It looks like he's very slowly climbing out of his hole, but the question persists; does he have the game and the desire to make it back to the TOUR? I want to think yes, but when faced with the battle ahead he will inevitably face, I just don't think he has it in him. We shall see...I hope he does.

Duval could use the career money exemption next year if he wants. Of course he'll get the occasional sponsors > invite/exemption, but this really could be it. He'll use his Top 25 in career earnings for a 2007 TOUR exemption (barring a spectaculor finish at Las Vegas, Disney and/or Innisbrook) and his Top 50 in career earnings for a 2008 exemption, if necessary. Don't look for any Q-school applications past that. I'll bet his big Nike contract (post British Open) wasn't more than 5 years either. So, he'll have to start playing well again to rake in any major cash past the 2007 season. If that doesn't happen in 2008, look for DD to hang 'em up.

Duval has $16M in career winnings so he shouldn't miss the Nike money or have to flip burgers at Mickey Ds. Many tournaments have "past champions" exemptions for some period of time. Sponsors will give him ones here and there. I'd bet he could play 11 or 12 times a year for the next 5 years apart from using any of his career earnings exemptions. He can play the Open Championship for another 20 years or so. He actually also qualifies under "veteran member" although this is the last of the exemptions on the list.

Whatever happens, I would not worry about Duval. He has made a lot of money over the years (including $5 million per year from Nike), and he has a reputation of being a "saver" so I am sure he a lot of money left, more than enough to last him comfortably for the rest of his life.
