News flash.
Perry had a secret. He rarely doctored the ball. Sometimes he did. But his
power over the hitter was that the hitter 'thought' he was doing something
weird.
Anytime an ump came out and checked his cap, glove, belt, hair, etc, that
was power for Perry.
He'd go to his cap, he'd go to his belt, ...he was just getting into their
heads.
He cheated just enough to make the hitter wonder.
He used that doubt to his advantage. 315 wins.
Guys would go back to the dugout and tell the rest of the hitters that
Perry's ball was 'cutting and diving'. It was a game.
I got that info from a very well known ( 12 years ) ex- MLB pitcher who's
currently a well known pitching coach. < My son's pitching coach too >
He said Perry was the master of making hitters wonder.

My favorite Gaylord Perry anecdote:
Towards the twilight of his career Gaylord played for the Mariners. On time
SS Spike Owens fields a routine grounder and throws to first. The throw
misses wildly...maybe even into the stands. Later Gaylord would tell Spike
"Ya gotsa throw it on the dry side."

I think you mean "lick."

Big Tex probably has a lot more game than those other two gaylords, and
he hasn't fared so well against me.

Maybe if you lost that Pumkin gut?
