Subject: Tiger's cut streak

I have heard that several of the tournaments in the making the cut
streak of Tiger shouldn't count because they were actually
invitationals in which there was no offical cut after Friday. True or
not? If so, how many such tournaments were involved?

That happened. Also, he made the first cut, but not the second cut
back when The International had 2 cuts.

I'll answer from memory. If you want the exact numbers, do a Google
search on "consecutive cuts" for posts I wrote last year, but
basically:

1) Consecutive cuts, unlike other things we debate here (like Grand
Slams), is an official PGA statistic. The PGA says what counts and
what doesn't, and nothing anybody says here matters. The PGA says
Tiger's no-cut events count. That's really all you need to know.

2) The man who held the record before Tiger, Byron Nelson, had no
official cuts on Friday. As in Tiger's case, the PGA determines which
of his events would count, and they decided to count all events where
he finished in the money, which *averaged* to around a top 20 finish.
While it is difficult to quantify strength of field, it is a matter of
record that Nelson compiled his most impressive stats when most top
golfers were not playing, due to WW II (Nelson had a deferment).

3) It turns out that if you eliminate the no-cut events, Tiger came up
a couple short of Nelson (IIRC, 111 to 113). On the other hand, the
PGA designated an event that was delayed for six months, and which
Tiger could not complete due to other commitments, a missed cut. If
they had started counting with an actual missed cut, he would have
broken Nelson's record outright. It is interesting that the people
who protest the PGA's ruling regarding no-cut events never question
their ruling on this incident.

4) Eliminating the no-cut events would be ridiculous. For example,
this week Tiger is leading one of the strongest fields of the year at
the Bridgestone World Golf Championship. It is a no-cut event,
because only the top 80 or so golfers in the world get in (no
amateurs, no Coodys, no club pros). If he beats the 80 best golfers
in the world over four rounds, should it not count as a made cut? It
happens that he has won an amazing percentage of these elite events,
including a full 50% of the WGC events, and was in the top ten in most
of the others. IIRC, out of about 30 stroke play events, he met
Nelson's criterion of a top-20 finish in all but one. Even if you
only counted the no-cut events he won, he would have something like
120 consecutive cuts.

5) It is no coincidence that Tiger's streak ended at Byron Nelson's
tournament. Although some say that Nelson was exempted from service
during WW II due to a blood disorder, that is just a cover story. He
was actually exempted because he was working on a mind control machine
for the US Government. Draw your own conclusions.
