It's his life so let him do what he wants. MYOFB

It's like - why? He certainly doesn't need the money and I thought the idea
was to save himself for the important events.

Maybe not, but $120/day might thin out the riff-raff who feel compelled
to shout at the top of their lungs the same clich=E9s after every shot.
I predict somebody's caddy is going to snap, go through the ropes and
beat a spectator to death before the decade is out*.

That's true, but if you would like the best opportunity to see the
absolute best golf... and arguably the best golfer to ever hold a
club... somebody may have to pony up the fee of "da man" most likely to
accommodate both desires at once.

It will also thin out the mums and dads and their kids who could be the
the future of Australian golf. It won't thin out the corporate rabble,
who are often the most boisterous and the heaviest drinkers. Fortunately
Australian spectators haven't taken up that cliched riff-raff stuff much.

You just have to look at the NZ Open for precedent. A mum, dad and a
couple of kids, say 16 and 14, can go to the Aus Open for the whole day
for A$78 (reduce that by $20 if both your kids are under 15). The idea
that Tiger Woods' presence would increase that figure to around $350-400
is disgusting. Golf Australia, which has about 600,000 "mum and dad"
affiliated club members, would get an enormous amount of flak if they
made the Australian Open that exclusive.

It's a matter of price versus value. I'd pay $29 (the current entry) for
Scott, Ogilvy, Appleby, Allenby et al. I wouldn't pay $120 for Tiger. I
think most Australians would agree.

It is possible though that the NZ Open may have benefited in the long
run by getting that publicity they had with a "loss leader" Tiger
year.

The NZ Open is not even on the Australasian Tour any more.

Tiger Woods helped send it out of business as an event of any
importance. Not a loss leader, just one huge *loss*.

I understand you completely...however it is pretty flippin' cool standing 10
feet away from Tiger Woods when he's hitting a golf ball.

Yes, and a Tiger wedge to 10' is SO much better than an Ogilvy wedge to 2'.
We know, we know.....

Well it sort of says he may get $5 million. What it says is that's his
going rate, and Parry thinks he would be worth it.

In my opinion, if that's what they have to pay, and going on the NZ Open
experience of a few years ago, paying that much would kill it. They have
enough trouble finding enough to fund prize money of US$1.5 million, let
alone an additional three times that much for Tiger Woods.

The NZ Open was a disaster. It made headlines, but that was about all.
The event lost millions. They put the entrance fee up so high (about
four times normal) to pay for Tiger that people stayed away, and they
actually took less at the gate than in previous years when Tiger wasn't
in the field. Average Australians will pay $30 to go to the Open for a
day, they won't pay $120.

The one hope they've got is that Tiger wants the Australian title so
much that he'd negotiate a much lower rate.

This year's Australian Open, which starts next Thursday btw, has the
best field in years, mainly because there are now so many Aussies high
in the world rankings. When you've got guys like Scott and Ogilvy in the
field, you don't need to pay Tiger Woods millions to see good golf.

The organiser of the Aussie Open (Paul McNamee) said on SEN radio this
week that he had no intention of chasing Tiger in the next few years.

Good. My response would be that if Tiger wants to win the Australian
Open, he can come down here and play for it like everyone else.

I reckon the best Aussies would put on a better show on their home turf
anyway.

The point is that I can hit a wedge to 2' but nobody will pay to see me
do it.
If it was just about good golf the Nationwide Tour would be
flourishing.
It's all about star power, baby!
That's why I've still got 4 unused tickets to the Tour Championship
that Adam Scott won.

Yup, pretty much hit the nail dead centre, there.

For those of us who know better, yes it is.
