Subject: Tiger Snubs the Vardon

The 5 PM EDT deadline has passed, and Tiger has apparently decided to
skip the Disney, which means he is turning down the 2006 Vardon
Trophy. I know there are more important things to worry about right
now, but it would be nice if the best player who ever lived had a
little more respect for one of the game's oldest awards.

It's the year his father died. Tiger's won more Vardon trophies
(6!) than any other player who walked the planet, all this
accomplished in his 20's. Let's give this a rest, shall we?

He didn't turn down the award, he didn't qualify. Just like I didn't
qualify to win an Oscar because I didn't appear in a movie this year. I
am not snubbing the academy awards, I just haven't qualified.

I couldn't agree more. Jack showed absolute disdain for the traditions of
the game by repeatedly dissing the Vardon and the Tour by not playing enough
rounds to qualify. Now if he had won it a bunch of times that would be
different, but in his whole career to not play enough rounds is just wrong.
Oh wait, were you talking about Tiger?

Actually, Jack did play enough rounds almost every year that he was in
contention for the Vardon, but was too lazy to comply with the other rules
of the PGA of America (which is different than the PGA Tour).

I suppose his records will have an asterick now.... I'm not sure that
"the game" will be too upset that Tiger doesn't respect "it's" oldest
award. I usually like reading your posts multi but this ones sounds
like laura helped you write it.

Geez, I didn't call him a criminal. I fully respect his right to play
when and where he wants. But he doesn't have to say, several times,
that he doesn't think the Vardon is important, or that it doesn't mean
much to him. When Jack said the majors were the most important thing,
they became the most important thing. Now Tiger is the best golfer in
the world, so when he says the Vardon isn't important, it becomes
unimportant.
He didn't need to do that. If he didn't want to play the Disney (and
he apparently knew that quite a while ago), he could have just said he
was very sorry, but he had a prior commitment. Problem solved.

she must weigh 82lbs and be anorexic then. My wife, who runs 40 miles a
week, weight trains regularly, and is fit as a fiddle (5'-2" 118#), asks
me that occasionally. I offer my usual diplomatic response..."of course
not dear"

She's 5'3" and has never been overweight a day in her life. She just
never asks that question.
If she did, I'd just respond with something like "That dress makes
everyone but you look fat".

Come on, this idea that Tiger has little respect for the game is silly.
Golfers are independent contractors and can play as many or a few
tournaments as they choose. Further, Tiger has done more for the game
of golf in recent years than anyone else. He has rasied the income
level and employment levels of everyone associated with the game. What
more do you want from the guy? If the PGA is happy with an arbitrary
award rule that eliminates its best player after he has played a full
season, that is on them.

I really do owe you an apology. Putting your name in the same sentence
with laura was pretty damn low. :-)
You make some good points but maybe Tiger is trying to make a point
with the PGA about their system. He may be trying to tell them they
need to change the qualifications. How about instead of min 50 rounds,
3 or more wins, or win 2 or more majors, or win 6 in a row.
The bottom line is, I'd much rather see him play in an event that he
wants to play in and not mess up his winning streak. That's not saying
he'll win his next event but I think he'll have a better chance if his
heart is in it.

To say that Tiger has "snubbed the Vardon" award is a wee bit disingenuous,
considering the fact that he's already won the award more times than anyone
in history.
