Is it me or are there more people hitting it further off line than ever
before? Maybe I just notice things more on slow days, but today really
stood out. The second hole on my home course is a mild dogleg left and a
lot of folks lose it a little right into the trees separating 2 from 8, or
even a little farther clear of the trees on 8. While waiting on the 7th tee
(a short par 3 that backs up) though I saw no less than 3 guys who had hit
off the second tee looking in the soybeans on the far side of 8 -- probably
at least 100 yards off their intended line. While trying to play 18,
someone came off the 9th tee, across the first hole and into the middle of
my fairway to try to play a shot back over 2 rows of trees. Now I don't hit
them straight all the time, but I rarely go farther off line than the tree
line. Start hitting them past the adjacent fairway and you have to start
worrying about the OB stakes on adjoining holes, not likely to improve your
round. My tip of the day: If you can't keep your driver at least on the
adjoining fairway, bench it until you've had a chance to work out what's
wrong with a lesson or a range session.

The equipment has made most everyone hit it father, but for most, it
equates to farther off line.
