I rarely watch The Golf Channel anymore, but last night I was flicking
through the channels when TGC ran a story about Tiger skipping the Tour
Championship. They showed some footage taken of Tiger at East Lake
last year and guess who was standing right there in the frame behind
him?
Everyone's favorite combover, The Hammer! Mrs. Hammer was there as
well.

I saved it on Tivo. Maybe I'll post a screen capture or a clip.

Tiger has a bunch of those. He wins Vardon Trophies like I win RSG
trophies so it's understandable when he decides to skip one..
Of course he gets to keep all of his Vardon Trophies. If they give you
a jug you have to return it. What's up with that? Do they make the
Masters Champions return their coats or the RSG-DFW champion return his
Big-Ass Texas Belt-Buckle?

True. However, most defending champions have the balls to show up the
following year and defend their title. The real chickens decide to
stay at home and forego their appearance fee and a chance to beat the
crap out of the competition again. Those guys REALLY are pansies.

Didn't Gary Player lose a jacket in Africa? I thought they now keep
their jackets in Augusta now. Maybe each winner also has a locker,
I don't know.

Most definitely. But I would hope that the wonderful philanthropic

does, and it would have been nice if he could have lent his presence to

Two reasons that I can see.

1. He's about to gear up for his big Asian trip + the Grand Slam thing
on Kauai.
2. He's never won at East Lake so his streak may be in jeopardy.

Phil, on the other hand has won both at East Lake and at Poipu (where
he shot 59) so skipping those two seems like a real brain fart for him.

What about the Vardon Trophy? I hope the ghost of Harry Vardon haunts
him at the British Open next year.

(BTW -- That Disney move -- The Greatest Game Ever Played was pretty
good. I loved the Harry Vardon character.)

What about it?

What if the Podunk County Rotary Club decides to give Tiger an
award next year and he skips that ceremony?

It's his career and his choice to decide what
events/awards/appearance-fees etc. have meaning to him.

There is nothing wierd about firing up the jet and talking his wife on a fun

What I don't like about it is his lame excuse of being "tired". If he
doesn't want to play in the event, because he has commitments in Asia,
then why not just come out and just say so.

I think because Tiger has been trained from an early age to be
politically correct and to not offend anyone. How would you like it if
you ran the tournament and Tiger told you..."uh, I'm blowing you off to
go to Asia and make 6 mil, tough shit dude" ? The media would have a
field day. No one can argue with "I'm tired"...except those of us here
in RSG of course :)

I don't know about the orgizers of the Tour Championship, but to me a lie is
the worst of offenses. The idea that Tiger Woods is too tired to play 4
rounds of golf, having not plaid competitive golf in what, a month? isn't
credible, so you know there's some other reason out there. If it's playing
elsewhere I would expect him to be honest about it and wouldn't expect
anyone to take offense. There may be something to the "protecting the
streak argument, but I wondered if it was something personal he just didn't
want to talk about. Tiger wouldn't even notice another 6 mil. In any case
this doesn't bode well for the PGA tour's new format. Are any more of the
big names going to play the fall events because of the playoff and bonus
thing?

I'm sure that TW isn't physically beaten down. "Tired" can mean
different things to different people. Calling him a liar is quite
presumptious.

I still don't understand why Tiger is skipping the Tour Championship.
If it's for personal reasons that he doesn't want to talk about --
illness in the family, etc etc -- that's cool. But if he's just tired
from a season of golf when he hasn't played in a few weeks, well, I
don't buy that one.

He was quoted as saying he was 'tired'.

Amazing really for someone who is always touted as supremely fit. He's
had 3/4 weeks off, however that 20minute flight to Atlanta must be too
much for him, especially to play on a course that he hasn't played very
well on.

Of course the 14hr flight to China this weekend with around $6million in
appearance money for 2 tounaments has no bearing on it at all.

I would not pass judgement on that unless I saw the entire quote, in
context.

Fly to Atlanta on another boring Tour stop that means nothing in his quest
to be the best ever, or, fuel up the jet and take Elin (one of the hottest
bitches in the world) on a cool trip to a foreign land and make a couple of
million. Tough call, that one.

After losing his Dad and then missing the cut in a Major, he got his
focus and is in his streak (with a Ryder Cup loss in between). I
don't know what it's like to compete at that level week after week. I
imagine it is draining.

First of all, "tired" to you and me is something entirely different than
what "tired" is to a TOUR player.

It's a good bet that Tiger was not referring to being physically tired.
Mentally tired is more like it. What those guys go through to get
themselves prepared mentally to play at that level (and Tiger is fairly
unique in this regard) is something that most of us mere mortals -- and
indeed, even the other "mere mortals" that constitute the rest of the field
at most TOUR events -- simply cannot relate to.

Surely the suspicion is that he's skipping the TOUR Championship because
he's not won at East Lake, and doesn't want to put his winning streak in
jeopardy. That's a logical guess, but it's what I would consider an
incomplete thought because it merely recognizes what's at the surface --
that he hasn't won at East Lake before -- and ignores other factors. Think
about it for a minute -- does anyone really believe Tiger is, or has ever
been, afraid of losing? That's pretty ridiculous, if you think about it,
given that he's the winningest player on TOUR, and one of the winningest
players in the history of golf. He hadn't ever won at Hoylake, either, but
seemed to handle it pretty well. In point of fact, there are very few
venues he plays where he's never won. And while it's true that East Lake is
one of those few, the players who will be there are all players he's
beaten -- and at times, beaten easily -- before. So as a matter of simple
logic, I rule out "fear of losing" as his reason for skipping the event.

Maybe he reached a point during his string of winning that he hit a wall and
said, "that's enough." Maybe he sensed that he was running on fumes the
last few weeks and made a commitment to himself to take the rest of the year
off. Who among us can't relate to the idea of making a commitment? (All,
maybe?)

In any case, I take him at his word that he was simply tired (mentally) and
wanted to take the rest of the year off. That doesn't preclude him from
competing in some overseas events or some US "silly season" events, none of
which would carry the same pressure, but might provide him with some
feedback on where his game is (I'm sure he's been tweaking a few things; he
always does).

The man has every right to just say "no." What part of that is so hard to
understand? When Mickey Phil skipped the TOUR Championship, once people
thought about it for a minute, it became a non-issue. Why should we think
any differently of Tiger skipping it?

Why isn't "I don't wanna play" an acceptable reason?

The idea of a 'TOUR Championship' is a little silly in my
opinion. PGA TOUR golf is not like the NBA, MLB, or NFL
where there is a regular season leading up to a single
championship.

It's just another tournament.

It would be on a mere mortal... but is should be just another day at
the office for Tiger. I gues she just wants to get out of the office...

I think it's because "I don't wanna work" doesn't cut it for most of
us... and most of us would "love to play" anywhere anytime. In other
words he can but won't and we would, but can't. Would/but can't gets a
little ticked off at can/but won't sometimes.
