I've hit a brick wall don't seem to be getting better (I'm getting
worse ) how ever much I practise. And I do practise..!! Particulary the
short game and putting..

I'm gonna give in get me some lessons, at least let someone see what
I'm doing wrong.

My handicap is 12 and will be up to 20 by the end of the year the way
I'm playing currently.

Problem is when I hear people getting lessons at the club, I hear all
the stuff that I already know I should be doing but I'm probably not.
So I have stayed away from lessons for this reason.

Seems a waste of money to hear him go over this with me. But I suppose
he may see something I'm not doing..

This game drives me nuts !!!

Anyone of a low handicap on the RSG still getting lessons .. ?

Cheers
Patty

Patty,

In talking to many teaching pros in this part of the world (Oz) I have
learned that more than 70% of their teaching goes to single digit
handicappers; and that more than 50% of these have two or more lessons a
month!

No wonder they are good!

In recently discussing the prowess of one of our elderly club members I
was commenting on his apparent 'natural ability' at scoring, and his
easily maintaining a single digit handicap at the age of 74! I also
learned to my surprise that he practises four times a week, spending
hours each time with his short game around the practice greens....he
also plays at least three competition rounds a week!

No wonder he is good!

cheers

My handicap is 6-7 depending on when you look at it. I continue to get
lessons. I need a trained eye to help me avoid falling into bad habits.
Plus, I think I can get better yet, and some of that will come from
lessons.

Patty, getting lessons is a great idea. You don't want to fall into bad
habits that will take you months to break.

And many times, what you think you're doing you're not really doing. If
you can get a video lesson where you are taped and you and the pro
review the tape, I believe you'll find it to be a wonderfully rewarding
experience. What you think you're doing is most likely not what you're
doing.

I'm a 4.5 (and trending upwards) and I'm going to see a pro this week.
Only had 3 lessons in my life before, mostly self-taught. However,
right now I need another set of trained eyes on my swing and set-up to
correct a few problems I'm having.

I've not had a lesson since 1987 or so....once you have the mechanics,
the rest is fine tuning. Most of that fine tuning is between your
ears. Stop worrying, stop thinking, just swing and play the game.

Go play a course you've never played and "just swing".

Thanks For the replies..

Had my first Lesson yesterday with a Pro, and immediatly my setup was
adjusted.

I was too rigid and upright and I now feel like I'm sitting on a stool.
Feels wierd but I'm sure I will get use to it.

We focused on this quite a bit and not much else as he commented my
swing looked good. So I'm glad now I am taking them.

Will return in a few weeks.

thanks for the help

You might take a look at Hogan's "Five Lessons" for some other great
pointers. The static issues like stance, posture, and grip can be easily
self taught. The beginning of the swing and the end of the swing are a bit
more complicated and dynamic.

Lesson 2 covers stance and posture of which the posture deals with sitting
on a spectator stick(stool). He illustrates a standing posture superimposed
over the swing posture.

*Some* people can self-teach these things from a book like "Five Lessons".

There are others of us who are unable to tell when we're not actually
doing those things.

The pro I took lessons from kept telling me to do things I was already
doing, or so I thought. He had to show me video evidence that I wasn't
actually doing it that way. It sure *felt* like I was doing it that
way. And I'm talking about stance and posture here. Grip, I would
forget between lessons, but I could grip the club how he told me when
he reminded me too.

It's nice to have a trained eye (or even one not so trained) have a
look once in a while though.
Even seeing your self on tape can be an eye opener and reveal many
things you were not aware of.

I started off trying to teach myself the golf swing from Hogans book.
I studied it for years, and probably read it 20 times or more. I've
also read just about every other book on the golf swing I could
find - maybe 50-60 books, at least.

My swing sucks. It used to suck way worse when I was teaching
myself from books, before I started taking lessons.

I'm beginning to believe that you are MUCH better off just taking
the lessons, and forgetting the books. Part of this belief comes
from learning that the golf swing is performed by a different
part of the brain than you use when reading. Feelings vs
logic, and all that. The other part come from my personal
experience, and watching others.

But this is just my personal opinion, and you are welcome to
yours.

Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner! FWIW the same thing applies to learning
languages. This is why most language courses in school can seem totally
useless.

Amen. My advice to anyone taking lessons: forget Hogan's book. Forget
any other book. Listen to the pro, and submit totally. You'll make
progress much faster. (But choose your pro carefully.)

I would agree with this to the most part except total submission.

Knowledge is power.

Learn what the pro is telling you so YOU can understand. Your long term
benefits will be far greater.

I couldn't agree less. Most people don't maintain proper posture from
year to year, or retain a good swing plane. That's why people have hot
and cold streaks in hitting.

far worse golf swings that even I who are pretty good golfers because
they know how to play golf a lot better than I do.

what's wrong, where is your game weak, what are you looking for? don't
interrupt the teacher,

listen to his assessment of your lousy make-up, and what's needed to get
it on track.

try it, if it works, you are a winner, if it doesn't, charge it up to
experience.

Learn how to strike the ball - right down the middle.
