So I'm playing 18 with my long time friend, shooting well for my usual game. Putts are dropping, and even the drives are relatively straight. We get to the 17th tee and he tells me, "You know, if you get two pars here you can break 80." So right away I get excited since anything around that is REALLY good for me. So I really blow up on the last two holes, putting one in the water and one way over the green. So I didn't get the 80, but did beat him by 2 strokes. Then the other day, I'm walking nine. Start off with a so-so drive, leave the approach short, chip and one putt for my par. Then I hit every green in reg for pars until the last hole. The last is a par five that I usually par or birdie, occasionally a bogey, but very seldom. So Here I go thinking, "Wow! I am REALLY gonna have a good nine holes here..." Yah, right. Damn short game blows up in my face. So, I am thinking maybe I should change my name to Phil?

Got rocks in your head? bill-o -- A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers neither of whom can putt very well.

I ran into the same thing last year when I was trying to break 80. I shot four straight 80's in a row! Talk about frustration. I spoke to a scratch golfer at work about it and he gave me something to think about. He said "it's about your comfort zone". I don't know exactly how to explain it, but, it seems we like to stay in our comfort zone and I guess subconsciously sabotage a good round to stay in that comfort zone. When I seriously concentrated on the shot at hand and not the score I broke through "big time"! On a relatively simple par 70, I shot 72 and didn't realize what my total was until I was done. I wrote drown the scores and knew I was playing very well but didn't get wrapped up in the overall performance. It takes a lot a self control to say "I don't give a shit what the score is, I need to put a good swing on this shot." Now, I haven't got that low again as of yet, but I have shot in upper 70's many times now. They say once you break through it becomes easier. Or, maybe its just your new comfort zone.
