Like, I thought it was totally cool when she made those 3 pars in a row and stuff.

Is there a way to block messages that have a certain content? Like "delete all messages that contain 'Laura Bush murdered' ... ? I'm using Outlook Express.

Push the 'Add' button, pick the appropriate options (news + mail, news only, etc.) I'm not 100% sure that this will work with an alias. If not, you can follow the same path to message rules for News and just follow the cues. Scott

Thanks, but that works for blocking senders, but when someone responds with the OPs message quoted ... I'd like to filter by content of the message. Hopefully not since that would require the newsreader to read the full text in order to block which is something of a waste. The vast majority of the computing time required by this operation would be associated with the requirement to download all messages. Once the messages were in local memory, applying the filter to them would be a trivial operation given today's average desktop. I have my newsreader set to download all messages simply because it doesn't take much more time with a broadband connection, it doesn't take much space by today's standards, and you never know when you might want a local copy. So much for the vast majority of processing time. Don't ask me why, but apparently some people want a scorched earth killfile capability. 'Not only will I not see any of your posts, but I won't see any posts that might have anything to do with you. So there.' For myself, I don't really see the point of killfiles to begin with. If I believe it's a waste of time to read a particular person's posts, then I simply don't read them. Who knows, maybe the asshole will luck into saying something interesting that comes to light through quotes. Why limit yourself with killfiles? If someone thinks the overused -plonk- has any real rhetorical affect, they are simply spending too much emotional energy on Usenet. Talk about wasting resources! Scott

I don't use them much, but that's just my preference. Some of what I wrote was addressed at the common practice of making a big flourish of plonking someone. Scott

Sure, she made a cut once in a men's event in Korea, and I suppose if she hangs around the PGA long enough she'll make a cut there. And if she hangs around another ten years, she'll probably do it again. But that's all she'll do. She should stick to the LPGA where she actually has a chance of winning something.

She's not eligible to join the PGA tour. So far as I can tell, she couldn't make it through Q-school, assuming she could reach the final stage to begin with. I think her high-stroke sponsors have allowed here to try things she's really hasn't earned the rights to. I'm beginning to think that RGS has a few participants that could give her a run for Nike's money. Imagine the TV ratings. Scott

She is *NEVER* going to develop the ability to hit the high irons to tight pins on hard greens or plow it out of rough onto the green from 180. People seem to think that if a woman can drive it 300 every now and then, then they have got the major weapon required to play against men. They don't realise that 90% of men on tour can drive it 300 every time if they want (stats don't indicate this). Most good amateurs (<3 hcp) can drive it 300yds regularly. Wie is never going to be strong enough unless she starts pumping major iron in the gym which can never be a good thing for her game. By playing LPGA and other womens events she can hope to get in great form and then maybe make a cut on the PGA Tour. She will never get close to retaining a tour card on the PGA Tour. Craig.

Do you think Tiger needs to return to his previous form? Maybe she's making some swing changes with Ledbetter. Her body is still growing too. I can't believe how a bunch of double digit handicappers can speculate on how a teenage girl who has finished 2nd in how many? majors ... on how she should conduct her schedule.

She'll be 18 in less than a year. In the meantime she can play, what?, six LPGA events plus USGA women's events. She can also play on foreign women's tours - remember all those endorsements she's got from Asian countries? She started off looking competitive against men. Now she can't even break 80. It's turned into a joke. Outside of local-yokel stuff in Hawaii, all she's won is that Women's Publinx. Really famous athletes with big endorsement money are supposed to be winning regularly.

You are an idiot if you think it's ok for her to get these sponsors exemptions while continually missing cuts by a dozen strokes.

Yeah, we're all idiots when we think money has something to do with their decision.

I'm beginning to think that RGS > has a few participants that could give her a run for Nike's money. Imagine > the TV ratings. She has the looks of a model and has had some pretty good golf outings. She was medalist at the preliminary US Open qualifying last year, for example, which is a really difficult achievement for a journeyman pro men's golfer . But that appears to have been on a good day. Now this "pretty teenage girl model tries to play pro golf" is really jumping the shark. Her sponsors have laid out a lot of money, and unless she starts playing well, they are going to turn to her other assets to recoup their lost capital, and it is not going to be a very classy show. But I think the regular PGA tour pros will recognize continuing to do this is bad for the PGA and sponsor's exemptions will stop coming. The sad thing is that Sorenstam is such a great player, great champion, and class act, and she is being totally overshadowed by Wie, who is a circus act but looks like a model. Says something about American values. -PA

You left out the part about fat old amateur golfer sport writers. There are teen age boys that can blow a ball past Wie all day long. The touring pros also blow balls past her so nobody is giving sponsors' exemptions to the teenage boys. All the top players hit the ball farther than most men. It's no big deal to see a young man hit the ball that far. It's like Reese Murphy - we aren't interested that he can hit the ball 200 yards and play good golf - we're interested that he can do that at age 6. We'd probably pay to see him if he was in a tournament. But once he, or Michelle grows up - they need to be competitive.

It is the combination of girl and long ball not long ball alone that sets Wie apart. If hitting a long ball was the singular criteria for sponsor's exemptions for 16 years old, Ms. Wie would be playing for the Hawaiian Junior High School Championship.
