Been playing solo golf most of the time for past 3 years, enjoying myself. And my score varies as much as 20 stokes (90 to 110). Is it normal for middle aged recreation golfer?

When I don't have it, I really don't have it :-) Wayne, "You are not a 2"...according to some here. Without consistant scores of 75 or less, you can't be a 2 :) Of course, most know that you can be a X and have your scores vary widely around your handicap...thus, that is why they take the 10 best of the last 20 :) Tex

What everyone forgets (or doesn't know in the first place) is that your handicap is supposed to represent your potential, not your average score.

I'm a 6 and I have shot 65 five or six times in my life. I've also shot 89 a bunch of times. I don't remember ever shooting over 100. I've played 3 times this summer (84, 78, 80). Haven't posted a score in a few years. Usually I am around 75 if I play well and around 84 if I am off. Thanks! That makes me feel better about my own index. -Greg

Is it normal for > middle aged recreation golfer? Absolutely. That is the difference between a lower handicapper and a higher handicapper like me. My scores, so far this year, for 18 holes, have ranged from 74 to 105; a 31 stroke range...so far! My USGA index is currently 10.8. I think the low has been 10.3 and the high over 16 for this year, as I recall. If I could strike the ball well more consistently my handicap would come down as the variation in my scores came down. It's why 2 handicappers don't go 5 strokes over or under their index very often, and why 20 handicappers do go more than 5 strokes over their index half the time they play and 5 strokes under their index about 5% of the time they play. Just look at the range of scores posted for different members at your club.

It's based on your best 10 differentials... not your average differential... then the average of the best 10 differentials is multiplied by .96... reducing it slightly more. In general your handiacap will be at least a couple (or so) strokes less than your average...

A player shoots to his handicap 1 out of every 4 rounds he plays.

Maybe he's perfectly happy shooting 100 every time out. I know a bunch of guys like that.

Also note that score doesn't really indicate how well or poorly you played. It depends on the difficulty of the course. My home course is a 72.3/135 rating/slope. A 77 there is like shooting a 71 at my dad's local muni at 67.8/114
