Basketball is much more widely played and followed around the world
than golf is.

More people play soccer (american term) in the world than any other
sport. Basketball is definitely still an american sport. With the
numbers of golfers estimated at around 50 million worldwide, I would
say that it may have basketball beat. I think that the number one
sporting activity (no debate here about what "sporting" means) in
america is actually bowling.

Of sports that people follow (which is why someone would know MJ's
name), soccer has to be #1 in the world. I would say basketball is
probably #2.

While lots of people in the U.S. bowl, the bowling stars are way down
the list in who they follow.

Howard, how many people do you know that are hitting the courts in
their 40's and beyond? Have you been down to your local bolwing alley
lately? Leagues are packed, the ages range from teens to
ogenarians. Heck, there was a guys that bowled in a league that my
brother bowled in who was 106 years old. I doubt you would find him
crashing the boards anytime soon.

Following a sport and being active in that sport are two different
animals entirely. Here in Germany, you could not find anyone on the
street who can tell you who plays basketball professionally in the
"Bundesliga." That is the equivalent of the MBA in America.

Sure, everyone has heard of MJ, but the most known athlete in the
world was probably Ali--and may still be. I was in Saudi Arabia
during the first gulf war and his picture is everywhere to be found in
muslim countries.

Of sports that people are active in, soccer has got them all
beat--hands down. Kids outside of the US begin playing soccer when
they start walking. In America, it is baseball, or basketball.
Outside of the US, the sport that my have the largest following of any
sport that the average person is not active in is more than likely
Formula 1 autoracing. I submit to you that more people in the world
know Michael Schumacher than know MJ, or Woods.

Yep, but following it is what we are talking about when someone asks
who MJ is.

Duh. MJ is Michael Jackson.
He'll bring a lot of fresh young talent to the US team.
And at the team meeting he'll do a moonwalk and sing, "Beat Em, Beat Em
...."

No more tom lehmans. The guy is a journeyman with only FIVE PGA
victories!!!!! I can't imagine tiger or phil having any respect for
him. Even Hal Sutton had better credentials than Lehman and that silly
turkey head bob of his. What a loser.

My short list of Ryder cup captains:

Bill Cowher
Bill Parcels
John Daly (talk about loosening up the team)
Fuzzy Zoeller (talk about really loosening up the team)
Larry the Cable Guy
