sorry to interject a golf question in this political newsgroup, but I
gotta know:

If one was to enter a greenside bunker to get a rake placed in the
middle of the bunker, then raked their way out of the bunker, proceeded
forward to their ball in the bunker some 40 feet in front of where the
rake was located, is this considered testing the condition of the
bunker? It seems to me that it used to be considered so but a decision
changed this situation but I can't find a reference to that decision.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Checkout Rule 13-4. You cannot do it! In a bunker 'intent' is
irrelevant, it is the effect that matters. You are only allowed to rake
a bunker AFTER you have played your ball. There is nothing in the rules
that permit you to smooth footprints etc before you have played your
ball. Penalty 2-strokes in strokeplay, or Loss of Hole in matchplay.

cheers

thanks david, it's interesting that in reading exception #2 that it's OK
to rake your way out of a bunker from afar if you have hit a shot from
the bunker and your ball remains in the bunker, but not when picking up
a rake in a bunker from afar. Seems rather inconsistent to me. No
difference at all as you are in a different part of the bunker in both
cases and just saving time...oh well
Dave

Getting cold up here, in the frozen North, Dave.
Today, out for a walk, in shirtsleeves, it was a bit chilly, really.
Weather's turning. I might have to wear a sweater this Friday morning
up at Tilden.
Like, arctic, ya know?
BTW: to hell with Cincinnatti, jvdp.

Hey Peter, I'll be visiting the bay area the weekend of 12/9. If you're
around let's get together for a round...maybe we could even invite that
left handed guy :)

Hey cool! I'm off to Maui 2 weeks after RSG-NW next year so I can get
some golf insight. Of course all of Dan's insight is back handed so I'll
have to decipher :)

$2500?!?!?!?! You're kidding yourself -- unless you're staying at a
five star hotel and planning on playing Muirfield Village every day.

36 holes a day for three days, airfare, hotel, food and drink, plus
misc expenses won't cost you more than $1,000 **tops** out here.

OK, well in that case, I might just spend $1000 to win a $2.50 beer from
you :) Oh, and btw, does OH have any 5 star hotels?

A couple of years ago, Annika hit the ball out of a bunker, raked her
sand, and then discovered that her ball went over the green into the
other side of that same bunker. She was penalized for testing the
condition of the sand.

Which is ridiculous, as raking didn't tell her as much as her shot
did.

Yes.

There isn't such. But for one that's close, look at 13-4, Exceptions,
2. Covers raking/smoothing sand after a bunker stroke when the ball
still lies in the bunker. Maybe that's the one you were thinking of,
and it's in the Rule itself, not a decision.

Tell Dan hi from me....haven't seen him in ages (my fault for
cancelling the San Juan Oaks round a few years ago). See if you can
rally him to come up for RSGNW.
