Subject: Rules Q: Ball comes to rest in golf cart

What is the proper procedure and what are the penalties, if any, when a
struck ball comes to rest in a golf cart?
This came about on a short par three hole where I hit the ball really
well causing it to fly past the green and come to rest under the gas
pedal of the golf cart of the group in front of us that was teeing off
on the next hole.

Ah, if the ball is in the cart, the ball would be placed on the cart
path, but then relief
can be taken from the cart path. True? My course does not have paths,
except at
the tees, and most courses do have paths at least near the tees.

24-1 Movable Obstruction
A player may take relief without penalty from a movable obstruction as

(a) If the ball does not lie in or on the obstruction, the obstruction
may be removed. If the ball moves, it must be replaced, and there is no

Good point. Actually, the ball has to be dropped on the cart path.
As is often the case, the ball will bounce either nearer the hole or
more than two club lengths away, so after two attempts the ball would
be placed on the path (Rule 20-2).
Thereafter, it's a new situation and the player can take relief from
the path as normal.

For future reference: if it's your own or your partner's cart, it's a
whole different story.
