Subject: Removing the spin?

During this year's PGA broadcasts, Wadkins has a number of times
expressed admiration for Tiger's ability to keep the spin off the ball.
I don't play golf and know less than zip about it, but what is the
significance of being able to do that? I assume it's both desireable
and difficult. How come? And are there other players who also have
that as a particular talent? How do they make that happen versus those
who can't do it?

Thanks,
Nancy

If you hit a shot with backspin, it can not only stop in place, but even
spin back toward the player. On a green that slopes toward the golfer,
a ball hit with backspin can often spin back off the green. In such a
situation, it is more desirable to hit the ball short of the hole with
little spin, so that the ball hits and bounces forward, rather than
spinning back.

There are circumstances where it's desirable to hit a ball with backspin
so it will stop; other times you want the ball to "release" or move
forward after it hits. The ability to hit a ball both ways, with spin
and without (though in reality, "without" isn't possible; it's that
there's relatively little), is quite valuable.
