Hate to break this political lovefest, but has anyone (Mike D?) ever
refinished a Callway Warbird head? I hate to send it back since the
thing is probably only worth $40 (it's a 4 wood), but I love this club.
Is it just a clear that's sprayed on it? What kind of clear coat is
used?

tia.

No links for you, LB, but several guys locally have had their favorite
drivers custom painted with like flames, or, skulls, etc. at local auto
body shops. While I doubt you're looking for anything that fancy (or
expensive), I'd have to agree with Watson on the technique.

I couldn't find any articles... do you have a link?

Is the natural finish just a clear coat?

I can't recall where I found 'em, but it's the asme approach as doing a
DIY car repair:

Sand to bare metal using progressively smoother grits. Mask areas such
as the sole. Primer, colour, clear coat, all available from auto supply
places in spray cans. You can match the silver colour or do something
custom.

And no, the natural finish of the club is not just clear. It's a silver
paint, probably with a clear coat over it.

I've googled and found a few articles on how to do this, using
aotomotive spray paint...I was thinking of doing my GBB driver a few
years ago in red but never got around to it. BTW, I have a GBB 4 wood
and it's absolutely the best club I've ever owned. Had a BB 4 wood
before that.

Thanks, that's really the answer I was looking for. Couldn't tell if
it was clear only, or silver paint.

I never really thought of painting it an actual color, though!

IIRC, all the 'Warbird' type series of Callaways were simply tumble
rolled and then clear coat finished. No paint involved at all.

Get thee to a toolmaker's shop and have the head 'glass beaded', (which
is just the same effect but more applicable to 'one-off' items) then
prime and carefully apply/spray a two part clear finish. Head will look
like new. Leave the clear coat finish for at least two days before use.

cheers
david

Of course all of what I've said about paint, colour, etc applies to a
GBB. The Warbird is older of course, but even if it's raw metal +
clear, that won't prevent you from making it custom.

Whatever you decide to do, you'll want to be super careful with masking,
around the hosel and the shaft, and if you go colour, around the sole
area. Also, decide if you want to repaint the face. GBBs had a painted
face, whereas the older (and the newer)drivers do not.
