Had one of those rounds yesterday and ended the day having taken 14
shots from bunkers. There wasn't any 2 or 3 shots to get out of a
bunker stuff, I was just laser-sharp in my ability to hit any bunker in
range be it large or small.

I assume that this isn't any kind of a record, but was wondering how
often this occurs on relatively heavily bunkered courses.

ps. After reading about the recent Iran Holocaust conference, I just
had to put this together - sorry.

Never counted them but I definitely have had rounds that seem like I
hit every bunker on the course. Usually I am hitting th ball fairly
good on those occasions, missing by just a little and ending up in the
bunker. When I am hitting really crappy I miss the bunkers by a mile.

Heh, I like claiming my "double sandies" (tee - > fairway bunker -> greenside
bunker - > one putt on a par 4 or 5) and "triple sandies" (same thing but
with two fairway bunkers then a greenside bunker on a par 5) as such if I'm
playing with people who care about stuff like sandies.

These are actually fairly common for me since when I hit into a fairway bunker
I'm much more likely than I otherwise am to find a greenside bunker with the
approach since I tend to pull the ball out of fairway bunkers and it makes a
beeline for any bunker on the left side of the green. Unless I aim right of
the green to account for this, in which case it goes dead straight, of
course!

My dad really gets a kick out of it when I make a triple sandie, but I still
prefer making the much more satisfying (but rarer) double sandie on a short
par 5 :)

Within my former skins gang, we paid off on double/triple sandies.
Although I was the first to ever claim a double sandy after failing to
get it out of the bunker the first time, but holing the second one.
After much debate, they paid :-).

We played everthing imagineable, birdies, eagles, closest to pin on par
threes (IF you parred the hole).

We also had a little proviso that I've never heard of before ... any
three putt COST you a skin. I sometimes would be in the red all by
myself, no opponent needed. Btw, the three putt penalty was off if you
got on the green in less than regulation, like hitting a par 5 in two.

We also awarded half skins for GIRs. All totals rounded up at end of
round.

Lordie, I miss that ole gang of mine....

We played "snakes, camels and skins." You had the snake after a
3-putt. If no one else took a 3-putt, you were stuck with it and it
cost 5$/man. You had the camel if you did not make and saves out of
the sand. You could get rid of the camel in one of two ways--make a
save out of the bunker, or someone else takes the camel from you. So,
many times, someone in the group was trying to catch a bunker on 9, or
18--snakes and camels were nine-hole events (could cost you quite a
bundle on a bad day). The thing is, the bunker gaurding the green on
9 was very deep. The 18th has two bunkers--one left of the green and
one short and right. The bunker short and right was a postage stamp.
The one left was long and very narrow. It is amazing how difficult it
was to find the bunkers when you were really trying for them :-)

That's funny. I went to an office scramble where the 18th green was
next to the club house, and everybody who finished his round could sit
back and watch others finish. They had a prize for longest putt at
that hole. Well, several people who were out of running for any
other prize made their first putt to get beyond the marker of the
previous longest putt. One guy tried 3 times to get a longest putt
(putt in, putt out, putt in, putt out, putt in) before the friendly
cat-calls persuaded him to stop.

Either my courses don't have as many bunkers, or I've been luckier. I
did play in a tournament where there was a payment for sand saves -
and I got a par on a par-5 hitting out of 3 different sand traps. I
tried to argue that this was 3 sand saves, but lost my argument (with
a smile).

FWiW, I average 4.8 bunker shots (fairway and greenside) per round on
this course. On another course that I play frequently it is slightly
less than 1. Not surprising, but the course matters.

I know a guy that once took between 33 and 36 strokes in one bunker at

How do you do that? Even if you take a swing every 20 seconds that would
take over 10 minutes. Amazing.

You don't really believe someone is going to take 20 seconds between shots
when they are hitting that many, do you? If I was playing with someone who
tried to take 20 seconds per shot over and over out of the same bunker,
after watching this for a minute or two I'm going to suggest they just toss
the ball out. If they don't listen then I'm going to bury them up to their
neck in the sand and leave 'em behind :)

Let's see here

- 3 seconds for the ball to come to rest
- 4 seconds for the appropriate verbal diatribe
- 3 seconds to listen to catcalls from your playing partners
- 3 seconds to move to where-ever the ball went
- 3 seconds to address the ball
- 2 seconds to execute the next swing

Only 18 seconds :-)

Once they get to their 4th shot out of the same bunker, I'm waiving the
requirement that the ball comes to rest before their next swing, the
verbal diatribe and catcalls will be taking place constantly so no time
is added for them, you don't need to address the ball and your next swing
is started as you are moving (if necessary) towards your ball. So I figure
starting with the 5th shot, it shouldn't take longer than 3 seconds per.

Just for grins I went into the back yard and tried to simulate my "personal
rhythm" after about the 5th consecutive bunker shot, assuming at this point
it was pure frustration, rather than golf - or maybe they are the same :-)

My personal duff-it rhythm would seem to be about 9 seconds per swing.

I wasn't there... but I would suspect that there may have been at least
a couple 5 swing tirades??? :)
I'd also assume that towards the end, He wasn't doing any pre-shot
routine... just setup and and hack at it.
I tried to find a pic of that bunker, but couldn't. As I rememver it is
tall... 10 feet or more and the bank is all lined with rail road ties
and it runs some of the fairway and the entire left side of the
green... I was thinking it was the 17th hole, but it's been a long time
since I played there.
