Subject: Question - Shipping Clubs Mainland to Hawai`i
|
Going to be playing about six tracks on Kaua`i and Oahu in September and am looking for suggestions on getting the clubs over. I've flown with my hard- case, either with my clubs, or mine & wife's in 2 Sunday bags, but only domestically. It's OK, but we'll be doing an overnight in SFO both ways, to get the flight that I want and also switching islands in mid-trip. I can rent at most locations (US$45/set/round), but two CC's do not have rentals. Those are on Oahu, so I could rent for the week from Nevada Bob's in Honolulu. I've got a few Web sites of shippers, but have never used them. Seems that the price for getting our clubs to both islands is about half of the rental, including insurance. Anybody have experience with club shippers, or taking clubs to HI? If I check them, I'll have to pay UAL excess baggage, and then handle the buggers a bunch - tips to skycaps all over the place. What do you guys/gals do? Hunt

I had our clubs shipped directly to the condo we spent a week at in Kailua Kona. Then inter island to Molikai'i for another week, then back over to the big island again to Hilo to visit some friends for a few days then Drove across the island to spend a long weekend at Hualalai. We handled clubs ourselves for all the inter island trips. I shipped the clubs home to NY from Hualalai while we flew to Oahu for a couple of days in Honolulu. Back from there to an overnight in Vegas and back to NY. The small airports on the islands were no problem, but didn't want the hassle in the mainland facilities. Besides, I think we played 13 -14 rounds and the rentals for two sets would have been over the top. Ship em! Enjoy the trip. Joe

The inter-island connection (Kaua`i to Oahu) poses too tight a schedule, plus there's a weekend in the mix, and the shippers cannot handle that. I'll probably just lug and pay for that part of the trip. I'll just look for a young, and strong skycap at Lihue, and have a bunch of tip $ handy. I'm checking with Aloha Airlines (Inter-island carrier) to see what they charge for additional luggage. I've had excess baggage charges waived with some camera gear, but that was years ago - back before the airlines charged for aisle seats, water, and the like. Hunt

I've went to Hawaii for 5 weeks once and still only brought one piece of luggage. I now live on Maui and have for 2.5 years. I have never worn long pants since living here (except for when I work). No restaurant here requires it that I am aware of and I've been to most of the best ones. My wife actually bought me some underware this past weekend that is so cheap that I'll but some when we go away next year for a long trip and kust throw them away.

Used to be 75# but for most airlines (United, American, Alaska) it is now 50# which is not much considering clubs, couple pairs of shoes, couple doz golf balls, misc clothes, etc...

It's been a while since I was there, but I don't remember anything special about taking my clubs. Just put them in a case, as with any trips since, and there's been quite a few.

I think his biggest hassle is he is overnighting in SFO twice so he is probably booked with Sfo and Hnl as independent destinations. In other words, he may have to the golf bag drag to and from the Sfo hotel. Then there is the island hopping bag drag. If you really want your own clubs, ship them. Enjoy your vacation. If you don't care what clubs you hit, save the hassle and rent. Another option: Ship your clubs to Kaua`i and back for your play there and rent at Nevada Bob's on Oahu. Now if he arrives one day, then stays overnight, then gets a plane the next day, that's a different story but not out of the question. He may want to get his regular luggage to have with him overnight, but checking his clubs right through is an option. I suggest he call the airline and ask about it. I think there is too much risk sending the clubs ahead. Where doe she send them to? His hotel? What's to say the hotel wont' loose them or the shipper. I would want them with me. I went to California for 3 weeks once and wanted to play at Pebble while I way there. I brought my clubs with me and only played at that one course. It wasn't that big of a deal.

Last time I checked, Hawaii was also a domestic flight. Don't forget to post to alt.trip.Imgoingtohawaii to see if you can get a better rate changing your money from US to Hawaiian on the mainland or in Hawaii. [SNIP] You are correct. I should have said Trans-Pacific, or been more specific in the actual flight plan, like in the title: Shipping Clubs Mainland to Hawai`i. Next time, I will leave off "domestically," and substitute "Mainland." Also, the ATM at the resort (Kaua`i) will exchange US$ for coconuts, IIRC. The rate is pretty good too. Thanks, Hunt

That's what Wife and I did last year to Kauai. there were so darned many of them at baggage check that I would advise some goofy color on your handle so you can easily identify them. If the lugging around is hard on you, tip a Porter to help out. I'd bet you would spend less on the tips that you would on the shipping charges. Have a great time over there regardless. Kauai has some great courses.

You know, they'll mess you up, every chance they get. Last trip to Lana`i, we rented, but then we were taking the ferry from Lahaina for the week, and I REALLY didn't want to schelp them down to the boat, then up to the car. Only problem that I had, was that all golf balls arrive on Lana`i via container ship (old pineapple wharf) and there were not enough on the island for me to finish my round at Manele Bay. I did get filmed for a Japanese travelogue on #8 at Koele, however, as did my wife. We both hit drives of a lifetime to a blind landing area, while the narrator prattled on in Japanese, and the gaffers waved reflectors all around. The big Sony cameras were a distraction, but I'd love to see that tape. I do not think I've hit one so well in a very long time. Now, did you fly to Mau`i and then to Lana`i, or did you do HNL direct to Lana`i? The various plane changes and overnighting in SFO are what I'd like to get around. Anyway, I can always just rent and say the hell with it. Thanks, Hunt

Take your clubs on the plane. Stuff your travel bag with socks, underwear, bathing suits, etc.. that can get wrikled. Take one less suitcase, and you're home free (2 checked bags). A golf pro once told me that on the lesser tours the golf bags are usually packed with dirty clothes, which also serve to protect the clubs somewhat. I did this once, and had a 40 pound golf travel bag with a 15 pound suitcase (nearly empty) to check on the way home. Worked, though. It seems like we spent more time packing and unpacking then we did relaxing. The next time we went, we were less ambitious and stayed on Maui for a week. I took the ferry over to Lanai one day to play golf at Manele Bay. I love the two courses on Lanai, but there's nothing else to do there. I love the Princeville Course and the scenery on Kauai, but there's little else to do there either. Maui is the best of both worlds, with great golf, great scenery, and a night life. The Big Island was my least favorite. The golf was great, but unless one likes miles and miles of ugly black lava, there ain't much else to see. Nice sunsets, though.
