Subject: Pro V1 Alternatives (yet again)

I had been playing the Callaway HX Red for quite a while. They are getting
harder to find (no longer in production) so I decided "to hell with it" and
went back to the Pro V1 a couple rounds back.

It has been over two years since I played the V1 and I am quite surprised to
find that I am at best neutral on the ball. I am REALLY picky about how a
ball spins on partial wedge shots (particularly those carrying 30 yards and
under). The V1's that I am now playing seem to have some kind of thresh-hold
below which they just don't bite like I prefer. For me and my 58* LW that
would seem to be around 25 yards or so.

However (as was true before) the darn things bite too much off full swing
SW'es and LW'es. And while I don't notice them being either longer or
shorter than the HX Red's, I often get this kind of "hollow feeling" at
impact that I don't recall with the HX Red. It doesn't seem to affect
anything, but I just don't care for it.

I like the Callaway HX Tour even less than the Pro V1 (haven't tried the HX
Tour 56). Given my preference for spin performance on those partial wedge
shots it seems hard to believe that I'll like the V1x, but maybe I should
try it.

Anyone out there know of a ball that spins "like the V1 did three years ago"
on really short partial wedge shots?

Thanks.

dave

It is on my list, but I never seem to find any so I can't try them out for

Just curious, what is your handicap? You are very particular about your
ball.

After reading your OP I thought you either had to be a low Hdcp or a very
frequent player (or both) because I don't see the kind of differences you
explain. I'm about a 12 (but would have a hard time playing to that right
now), I play on weekends and stick pretty much to the Pro V and only
occasionally try a different ball. I have tried the Bridgestone B330 (like
them) and I have some Callaway sleeves in the bag that I just haven't got to
yet.

I will admit to being "pickier" than the quality of my game warrants
(6'ish - probably more likely to go up vs. down). But I'm fortunate to be
retired and have excellent practice facilities. I spend a fair amount of
time around our pitching greens and really can tell the difference. This may
sound strange but the sound at impact is one of the things that I notice
most. My HX Red's had this 'zipping' sound when they hit the green from 20
yards. Pro V1's used to - don't any more.

An interesting ball that I tried a while back was the "Dunlop JD Tour" (John
Daly) that was a 3 piece ball sold at Walmart for $15/dozen. Its performance
around the green was OK w/me, but I found it a bit short off the tee. Of
course they are long out of production as well (which is how Walmart got
hold of them in the first place).

Try the Bridgestone B-330 and the 330s

I have used the 330 but not the s (for spin). I like the 330 and find it every bit as
good as the Pro V1. It does cost about the same, so you'd expect that, I guess.

I've heard the Nike One Black and Platinum are also equivalent to the Pro V1, but I can't
say from experience.

The Bridgestone does have a more "substantial" feel, IMO.

Put me down for a three. I started on the Bridgestones earlier this
year and when it's time to buy new ones, I just keep on getting them.
Don't get me wrong - I think the PV-1 is a great ball. But, for some
reason, I seem to migrate back to the 330(not the "s").

i purchased a dozen of last year's nike one black last week and played
with them on sunday. i must say, these puppies stop shorter around the
greens than the ProV's someone gave me. As long off the tee. I was
given a sleeve of Nike One Blacks last year and really liked them then
as well. On sale here at Golf Town 36 bucks.

I feel the same way. Rick R. mentioned Bridgestone B330, and I'll
second that.

I played the B330-s exclusively this season until recently giving the
Callaway HX-Tour 56 a try. The B330-s has great spin and feel, and is
long off the tee. My only complaint is with durability. 18-holes per
ball is about the max for me.

The HX-Tour 56 performance is similar to the B330-s, but I think the 56
gives me slightly less yardage with my driver. All other shots are
about the same. I've found the 56 to be more durable than the B330-s.

After I use up this dozen Callaways, I'm going back to Bridgestone.

2002/3 vintage ProV1's are about the only balls that I have ever liked
around the greens while also having durability well above wet tissue paper.

My favorite of all time was the Strata Tour Ultimate. I'll swear that these
things would scuff just bouncing around in my bag.

I'll third the B330.

Recently I made the mistake of playing with a Bridgestone e6 ball, I felt
that I couldn't control it and I had many shots from within 100 yards that
hit the green and kept going off the green - no stop at all. I happened
upon an HX-Tour and that was a great ball....then I made the mistake of
trying the e6 again :-)

I'll second the NIke Blacks. they are about as long off the driver for
me as any ball I've ever hit. I don't get consistent spin with them...
but that's probably just the way I hit it.
a little clicky off the putter (IMO)... same as the Pro Vs (IMO).

Have you noticed that they seem to go out of round pretty easily? They
are buttery soft off a putter... that's for sure.

I didn't play them very long (3 or 4 rounds) and didn't notice that (out of
round).

And yes they are the softest feeling (off the putter) ball I've ever hit.
However that is one thing that I'm not picky about.
