Subject: Playing Different Balls

I was playing the other day with a guy that I know well, but rarely get to
play with. He is a good golfer (index bounces around in the 2.5 to 5.0
range) - a couple strokes better than me (and he beat me by two that day).

I noticed that he was playing a Pro V1x and I was pretty sure that he was
playing a Pro V1 the last time we played. I asked him about that and he said
that he plays both, changing depending on the conditions of the course that
he is on. Very firm greens - Pro V1. Softer Greens - V1x.

I've never really considered changing balls depending on conditions, but it
makes some sense. In fact I could even imagine carrying a couple of
Topflight XL/Whatever's to use on marginally reachable par 5's (not USGA
illegal, but illegal in many competitions).

Anyone out there who is particular about the spin characteristics of the
ball that they use, change balls depending on conditions (or even the nature
of the hole being played)?

Thanks.

dave

pro V's SUCK! That's the 1st thing, there slice machines. You need to
be pretty good to evaluate. I see the biggest difference off the driver
& some off the putter. Only if it's real dry or cold will a harder ball
hurt me.

Honestly, I think the problem is that you suck (as far as your golf
swing). Their ability to stick on a green (and not slice) is second to
none, at least in my experience.

"slice machines" ?? Have you ever wondered why 80% of professional
golfers play Titliest ProV1 golf balls? Probably not to hit slices with.
Perhaps your golf swing SUCKS...ya think, maybe?

I don't have (and am unlikely to ever have) an index as low as 1. But there
are noticeable differences between a V1 and V1x (for example) - both off the
tee and around the greens. Depending on the game you play, those differences
might or might not be important. But if you like to pinch a LW off a
relatively tight lie from 20-30 yards - it matters.

I can see this being the case for better/really good golfers. For me,
though, about the only time I change balls is when there are a lot of
leaves on the ground and I don't want to lose my brand new "JVDP"
ProV1. I'll pull out an old ball and play with that one.

Or maybe golfers who like to act like they are really good :-)

I had a surprising conversation with the spouse of one of my wife's tennis
buddies. He carries about a 4 index, but I've never played with him. He was
on the putting green with four balls - each a different brand. I asked him
if he was experimenting with different balls. He said that he pretty much
plays what he finds.

You never know.

Im like that as well, if I have some Pro Vs in the bag, I will give them
priority. But if I dont, I'll just play whatever as long as its not some
cheap distance ball.

I believe the V1x flies lower. Was it windy as well?

actually, for me, it's the opposite. I get 2 to 3* more launch angle
with the V1x over the V1 (based on Titleist launch monitor readings).
But then my base launch angle is always really low so I may be the
exception to the norm ??

It wasn't a particularly windy day. I haven't noticed a huge trajectory
difference, but have heard enough similar comments to believe that is
probably the case.

No, they aren't.

Two years ago at RSG OH after the tournament round a large group of
people were gathered around the 18th green at Indian Springs to watch
the final groups come in.

I went into the clubhouse and brought out a large number of beers for
the gathered masses. Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking and brought out
Bud (in cans, no less).

Well, rather than give thanks to the Earth for the FREE plentiful
bounty placed before them on a warm September afternoon, they chose to
continue to malign my character and their own spendthrift ways.

I demand satisfaction.

Putters at 10 paces!! (Because we all know, Sneddon can't putt.)

A strawman rebuttal there, Pflum. An attempt to justify your extremely
poor judgement when it comes to ordering beer. And if I remember
correctly, Tex and I gave you the $$$ to buy the beer.

Bet I can putt better than you right now, though ... :-) :-)

I will say without a shadow of doubt that I purchased that crappy beer
with my own money. We all know Scotsmen are too cheap to buy
something when they might have the chance to get it free.

BTW -- We were paired together that day and I doubt your feeble legs
were strong enough to walk to the clubhouse. ;-)

Wow. You are right, you didn't get what you deserved....

More maligning! More maligning!!

Mr. 10 brought out an entire case of Bud to the 18th at Groveport this
year.
Bought with our money. We sent him back to exchange it.

No, you suck Kevin!! I hit a decent ball, well enough to know what
works for me. Golf is a very individual game, what works for me doesn't
work for all.
