Subject: PGA vs. USGA

For you Golf historians....

PGA and US Open are played on similar tracks. Here's my take on what
the "purpose" of each of these majors is:

1.) US Open - extremely difficult test of golf, positioning, and
shotmaking. Hazzards are worse and more penal, etc. Par is a good
score. Often times, a good shot will get a bad bounce and cause bogey
or worse (ie a well struck shot incurs a penalty at times).

2.) PGA - played on very difficult course, but less penal. The best
players and/or those who are playing great that week will rise to the
challenge and shoot under par.

Does that sum it up?
