Subject: PA-NY-MA Course Recommendations

In about a month my wife and I will be traveling from southern Ohio to
western Mass over the course of a week, and I wonder if anyone has any
course recommendations? We'd be taking I-90 up to Erie, PA then across
northern NY to Lenox, MA.

Some of the Zagat recommendations are:

Greystone http://www.234golf.com/greystone.asp
Bristol Harbour <http://www.bristolharbour.com/ >
Links at Hiawatha Landing <http://www.hiawathalinks.com/main.cfm >
Conklin Players Club <http://www.conklinplayers.com/index.html >

Any thoughts on these or others? We value beauty first and probably
service/attitude second with playability down the list a bit. Thanks
in advance for any help anyone can provide (if you could rank your
choices, that would be great - comments, of course, even better!)

As pete z. said, Peak n Peak is a good option. The best value
for your dollar is North Hills Golf Course, which is 11 miles
south of Peak n Peak.

Short trip off 90, just past Erie, off rt. 86, near Findley Lake is
Peak n Peak,
upper course is site of Nationwide tour event, lower course nothing
special.
Great views from upper course.

Off 90 in Ohio, near Madison, Reserve at Thunder Hill, beautiful, but
fairly tough course,
good value. Also off 90, in Painesville, Quail Hollow, in Ohio. 2
courses. A liitle ways
off 9, in Willoughby hills, Oh., Manakiki, public Donald Ross course.

If taking 90 across NY, Turning Stone, near Syracuse.

I'd suggest using golfcourse.com for exact directions. Have fun! If
you can only pick one off my list, I would suggest PeaknPeak, upper.
Stop at French Creek Inn, good food,
great prices.

You can come out to my course, Mill Creek Golf Club. Its located outside
Churchville NY, about 10 minutes from the LeRoy exit on the thruway.
www.millcreekgolf.com

Greystone is also an excellent track. Its always in great shape but the
greens are a major pain the ass, easily the hardest greens in the area.

Links at Hiawatha and Conklin Players Club are Southern NY (Conklin is
almost in Pennsylvania). I've played Conklin and it is a great course.
I've heard Hiawatha is nice but I've never played it. If you are
going to play these two courses, come out through Pennsylvania on Route
6 and make a stop in Wellsboro. Tyoga County Club is there and if it
works out, I'd be happy to play with you (and get you a reduced rate
for playing with a member). That would put the Links and Conklin in
your way as you traveled NorthEast.

Hi Brian & Rhumba

Greetings from Elmira...

I played the Links at Hiawatha Landing twice last summer - it's a beautiful
course. Because of the way it follows the terrain, the front nine is more
parkland style, while the back nine is set up like a links course. It
provides a nice challenge, and the greens fees are reasonable. But - not
sure if the course was damaged by the severe flooding in late spring along
the Susquehanna...

I have fond memories of the Tyoga C.C. That was where I played the first
round of golf in my life back in 1985, courtesy of Don Fryday, (then
publisher of the Wellsboro Gazette.) My wife worked at the paper at the
time, and Don treated the staff and their families to a golf outing as part
of the annual company picnic. Having never played before, I think I shot
150+ but had a lot of fun. I decided to take up the game in earnest shortly
afterward, and have enjoyed it ever since.

That must be a newer course - Hiawatha. I used to live in that area
years ago.
It is quite a ways from I-90. It is just above the PA border, near
Endicott, NY.
I wouldn't be surprised if they had flood damage also, since En-joie
did.

That is a great course for the money. Ed Ault design, cut out of big
woods.
Annual membership- 515 bucks! Members were all upset on gettitng it
raised from 500.
:-) It is a little off his route though. It's in Corry.

Thanks to all for the many excellent suggestions! I will duly pass
them on and we'll get the map out.

If anyone is passing through southern OH and would like some
recommendations for this area, I'll be happy to delurk long enough to
put in my $0.02.

Thanks again, everyone.

Strange coincidence - Fox Sports Network Ohio did a golf course report,
and visited
Thunder Hill. They loved it. Rated it 4 stars for everything. They also
reviewed
Fowler's Mill - a Pete Dye course. It also looked pretty good, and
their rates looked
really reasonable. It should be right on your route, as it is off 271.
Chesterland, Ohio.
30 minutes east of Cleveland. They have a website. I haven't played
this one,
but may try to get there soon. 27 holes.

I also remembered a course near this one that you may want to play -
Sleepy Hollow,
a Stanley Thompson design. It was in nice shape when I played there
last year.
It is very reasonable, since it is a Cleveland Metroparks course. It is
also off 271.

If you are going anywhere near Medina, look up Hawk's Nest. Also a very
pretty course,
also very reasonable. Just south of Medina, about 10 miles.
