Looks like lots of courses in Vegars are closed for overseeding late Sept. Can you tell me: (i) what this is and how it impacts play; (2) does it impact play in the week or two BEFORE overseeding: (3) does it impact play in the week or two AFTER overseeding - and, if so, how? THANKS

The warm weather Bermuda type grasses go dormant in cooler weather so they overseed with annual rye grass. Unless prep work is being done, there shouldn't be an impact before overseeding. Courses close to overseed so the rye has a chance to grow in. After overseeding, they may still be restricting carts to the rough for a week or two to minimize damaging new grass. Playing: Bermuda vs. overseeded Bermuda are two different worlds once the rye has taken hold. Isn't that usually the first thing done when they close to overseed? If the super is allowed sufficient to overseed - the original post said two weeks - then he'll be forced to so some prep work before the actual closing. I'm at a Conference in Salt Lake in 2 weeks. Wife and I were going to drive to St. George / Mesquite to play afterwards, but, it looks like the seeding schedule will make finding a variety of courses difficult. We're staying in the SLC area and playing up there instead. Hope the weather holds!

The Estrada in St. George doesn't aereate (sp) their greens until Sept. 25th and they are going private on . 1st, so that might be good for a place in St. George. Coral Canyon says they've already aereateededed their greens and do it in a way that gets done quickly, something about smaller holes and top dressing, etc. and that their greens will be good by this week-end. Good luck, have fun, commit to the line of your putts. : -)

Some of the Vegas courses have a staggered schedule so that one of their courses is open while the other is closed. It can be pretty restrictive. The greens are bad for at least a couple of weeks. When are you planning your trip? There are some pretty nice courses in Mesquite, not far away and they have some great specials ... room and green fee for about $100. http://www.theoasisgolfclub.com/ Check my facts, though. I goofy sometimes, but not about it being the greens, maybe the length of time they are screwed up after overseeding. Not about the deal at the oasis. P.S. Interesting that they overseed greens and play off dormant fairways. Many of the newer courses in Florida have TifEagle greens and don't oversed since it is less apt to go dormant in cooler temperatures. They will overseed fairways that have less hardy Bermudas. I called Las Vegas Golf Club which is the muni course here and they are reseeding now. The front nine is closed and they are playing off temporary greens on the back. The person I talked to wasn't too sure about reseeding the fairways but thought they do at the same time. I've lived here off and on for a long time, and never noticed much abaout the fairways, I guess because most of the coursed are shut down when doing both and I assumed that it was just greens, my bad. It is cart paths only on the courses too. I called the Oasis in Mesquite and they and the Palms and the lady said all of the Mesquite courses are also reseeding now or soon, even the one with bent grass. Apparently they don't mow the new greens very close so they are slow and probably bumpy for a couple of weeks, I would guess, after reseeding. I hope I didn't add to the confusion too much. I wonder if there is anyone who really has a handle on this. It soule be a project.

Then we must keep carts out of fairways for a week. The topdressed greens are played the next day. Wonder why they have to shut down Vegas courses?

Lots of good things are being said about that area - I just wish the conference had been scheduled for another time...
