I usually shop every 2 years when it is time to renew my homeowners and auto policies. I had not found enough significance in rates in the past with the various insurance companies to make me want to switch from the company I have been with for quite awhile. Imagine my surprise when this year, after shopping I was able to cut my auto/home insurance combo by 46%! For a 2005 Vibe and a house with rebuilding cost of $183K, my quote from my current insurance was $2420 /year. With the new insurance, the total is $1301! Both insurers are major companies that are well respected in the industry. But I got quotes from 2 other major companies, and while they were higher than the lowest one, they were still around 35-40% cheaper than my original insurance. So maybe this is the year you should be looking at insurance again. Lloyd

Just be glad you're not living in Florida. After the hurricanes in '04 the major carriers either refuse to accept new policies or are charging ridiculous premiums. We just bought a new home. After weeks of looking the only insurer we could find was Citizens, the insurance of last resort run by the state. $2600/yr. We eventually found a friend of a friend who got us in for the bargain price of $1700/yr. A steal. That's just for the house, not the cars, not anything else. What a f***ing racket.

So this year I went to netquote.com and filled out some info. Got calls from 3 referred agents. All were cheaper than Farmers. The 3 were, Country Insurance (used to be Country Companies), Hartford and Allstate. Ended up with Allstate as they were the cheapest of the 3. I'm insuring the house and the car for less than Farmers was offering for just the house alone. I queried the Allstate agent as to why they could come in so low. His answer was that the other majors look at profit/loss on a national basis, but Allstate does it and rates each state as a standalone.

Just be sure your homeowners is full replacement....not some mickey mouse percentage. I'm probably married to Farmers. The agent sends me lots of health insurance referrals. -Greg

I can see why Lloyd's wife insures her vibe. It's probably the only she gets off anymore.
