That's a fire. It's spiraling out of control when it becomes so prominent
on sat photos.

I really hope what's happening in Australia is just a statistical fluke and
not a harbinger for the rest of us. At the same time, I feel for my
brothers down under for what they are going through. Steinbeck comes to
mind.

When the rain stops, golfing will eventually become out of the question. As
they say, the furthest thing from our minds...

One and a half million hectares (that's about 3.5 million acres) of the
alpine area burnt in 2003. The remaining 600,000 hectares looks like
going up in the next week. Saturday will be the killer, tipped to be 38C
(100F) with hot northerlies.

What's worse is that there's four months of hot and dry weather to go.

Golf in a lot of places is not good. Courses are running out of water.

But hey, I had my second hole-in-one today. That's a little bit of rain. :-)
