Subject: Newbie question - course ratings and slope

I am a beginner, having started this game last summer at age 62. Today we
played a course called Cannon Ridge, close to Fredricksburg, VA.

The scorecard listed the ratings/slope for the different tee positions, but
in some cases there were two sets listed. When I got home and called the
course, the guy who answered told me that sometimes the tees were in
different positions. He didn't know which positions they were in today.

His answer made no sense.

Here is a site with the scorecard info. At the bottom of the page are the
two sets of numbers I questioned. For example, for the Grey tees:

Grey 70.2/74.3 136/134

http://golfcannonridge.com/layout9.asp?id=437&page=13158

What is the difference between the numbers.

Another dumb question: If my USGA index is 29.1, how do I calculate the
number of handicap strokes if I played the grey tees today?

Thanks

Some of the tees are rated for both men and women.

Per the USGA data base at
http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/course_ratings/course_rating_lookup.asp?id=lookup&sort=clname
there are four sets of tees. Green, gray, and blue are rated for the men.
Green, gray, and white for women.

The two sets of numbers could be for men/women playing the same tees,
with the higher difficulty for women. Although that rating/slope
suggests a pretty tough course.

I made up this name. It was a choice between this and Watson deMehneux.

I would assume that if the "Grey Tees" have positions that vary enough to
warrant two different slopes/ratings, then the yardages in the scorecard
would also be varying enough to warrant two different entries.

Sounds to me like you didn't get a very complete answer.

dave

ps. I spent a few minutes scanning the USGA Handicap Manual. I didn't see
anything covering this, but it might well be in there somewhere.

I couldn't find this situation either, but I did learn a lot about
handicaps.

Your "course handicap" is deteremined by the following formula

Index * Course Slope / 113

Why 113? I have no idea. That's the baseline number that the USGA
came up with. The slope rating is a weighting given to a "bogey
golfer" (the usga has an objective measure of a bogey golfer, too).
The course rating is the expected score of a scratch player. Now,
mostly depending on the hazards on the course, a bogey golfer may be
expected to shoot worse than bogey golf, and that's where the slope
comes into play.

So your 29.1 is

29.1 * 136 / 113, or 35. Statistically, one shoots to their handicap
or better 25% of the time, so you'll shoot 105 (70.2+35) or better, 1
out of 4 times.

Thanks. I wish that one time would happen a little more often!
