There is a certain amount of 'breaking in' of the hands when one starts each year, but if you're getting blisters, you're gripping the club way too tightly. Sam Snead used to say that you should hold a club like a live bird--tightly enough to retain control, but not so tightly that you kill the bird. Now, this never worked for me, as I have no experience holding birds. But it may for you. Another way to figure out if you're holding the club too tightly is to have some one try to pull it out of your hands. They should be able to, and if it takes a great deal of effort for them to do that--or your hands jerk when they try it--then you're gripping the club too tightly. A too-tight grip will inhibit the club's release through the hitting zone, and move you toward a swing you do not want. Let me suggest this: Get lessons. Now. I golfed for 25 years before i had my first lesson, and I rue the fact that I didn't have a few when I started out. I did not understand what the golf swing is supposed to do, had a terrible grip (which contributed to a poor swing), and generally had no clue. I know that spending money on lessons is not as sexy a use of that money as, say, paying greens fees or buying equipment, but in the long run, if you get lessons now before you develop bad habits that will take months or years to break, you'll enjoy golf much more in the long run. Good luck! Welcome to golf... You can actually tought it out with no glove and check your callouses to see if they are in the right spots. Ben Hogan's book "5 Lessons" has a diagram of the proper locations for callouses on your hands. So use it as a checkpoint for your grip. FrankenShank

hold the club as if it was a live bird, wear a leather golf glove, use "soft" type grips that - fit your hands. it might help. use a hand cream the night before that has medicinal properties. >mho >v fe >=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0"d R i V e =A0L e $ s"

Probably gripping the club too tight, but my right hand gets a little raw at the beginning of the season each year too. Then again, I hit a couple hundred balls a day before the season starts. Do you wear a glove on your left hand? I've never had a blister through a glove.

Gripping the club too tight. The only "squeeze" you need is in the last three fingers of your left hand (if you're a righty). The right hand should lay on top, holding the club snugly, but not too snugly, like holding a bird....or like a tube of toothpaste -- not tight enough to squeeze any toothpaste out of it. It's not uncommon to get a blister/callous or two even with a good grip. Tiger wears some tape on one or more of his fingers probably for this very reason. But if you have a lot of blisters, you most likely have a faulty grip. Get it checked out. If you grip is found to be basically solid, wear gloves on both hands when you plan to hit a lot of balls... at least until your hands toughen up.

I prefer something like the Tour Wraps which don't tear up my hands like cord grips do. --Tom

Your hands will toughen with practice. Take care of the current problems so you don't have any infection but the blisters will be replaced by callouses. You might try a glove some day on your target hand but that is a personal preference. Either way, you need to build a little toughness in your hands and the temporary blisters are part of that. Otto

Hi, Thanks for your advice. I noticed yesterday afterwards the the 'V' formed by my right hand was sometimes (when I get tired) pointing towards my left shoulder (as opposed to my right). This may be the reason why the skin rubbed of my thumb. I'm not so sure why I get them on my left hand (on the pads at the base of the last three fingers) Regards, D

Blisters come from rubbing. The club is moving in your hands while you swing. Chances are, at this stage you have a poor grip and a poor swing. It will take a while (if ever) for you to learn out how to fix this, so in the meanwhile buy a glove and wait for your hands to toughen up. Don't be surprised if you start wearing holes in your glove, too. You may want to try soaking your blisters in pickle juice.
