Subject: New putter tomorrow!

Just got a call from my pro. My first new putter in twenty years came in
today, a special order (2 up, 33") Scotty Cameron Newport 2. Putting has
always been the worst part of my game and I fully expect this new putter
to take many strokes off my handicap.

Or not. :-). I don't care. It looks cool, I wanted it. That's what buying
golf equipment is all about, right?

Ah, so three times in -- how many RSG events have there been? 100+?
-- has the host won.

But your point is well taken, John, and the biggest reason I won in 2003
is that we played at my home course.

I told everyone attending I'd not be eligible for the awards as it's not
fair to everyone else given my local knowledge of the course, greens,
etc. There was general booing and hissing as most said that anyone
else's wins would be accompanied by asterisks.

So I was eligible. Even though we had a practice round, and I wrote a
fairly detailed "how to play the course" piece with pictures and
everything, I still won.

I attribute that to the fact that our greens are small, sloped, and
fast, and the course offers a lot of uneven lies. When I play a course
with larger greens, less slope and speed on the greens, and flat
fairways, it almost seems...like a dream.

I did not have much thinking to do--I know how to play the course, how
to take trouble out of play, and that's that.

But ordinarily, I don't expect to win, and that's not the point of these
outings. Fine if it happens, but I need a certain amount of
preparation, warmup, putting and so on, and with all the handshaking,
setting of foursomes, introducing people, handing out goodie bags,
making sure everyone's on the same page, etc. etc. etc. (in other words,
all the stuff you do too), it's tough to get going.

Usually I like to be in the first group so I can take pics of people
coming up 18, which only exacerbates the warmup time problem.

But I always have a great time, and I think mostly the others do, too.
And that's the point.

Mike
