Subject: My report from Medinah and the 2006 PGA Championship

It's taken me a couple of days to recuperate from my trip to Chicago and a
couple of long work days after I got home Monday morning. But now that I'm
feeling pretty much back to normal, I've posted some pictures and a rather
lengthy narrative (you know me) about being part of the media that was there
at Medinah Country Club to cover the 88th PGA Championship.

My account of the week can be found at:

http://www.rsg-atlanta.com/06pga.htm

Enjoy.

Randy

PS: A note to Five Iron:

You asked about how pairings are done, and I promised I would ask the right
person to get you an answer.

Well, I posed the question to Roger Warren, President of the PGA of America.
Pairing are not random. The PGA has a committee that decides on 1st and 2nd
round pairings. Of course it is traditional that the PGA Championship will
include a threesome on Thursday-Friday of the three winners of the major
championships held earlier in the year, as was the case this year with the
Mickelson-Ogilvy-Woods threesome on the first two days of the event. Beyond
that, Mr. Warren told me it's completely up to the discretion of the
committee to formulate the threesomes as they see fit. He said there are
some groupings they'd just like to see, although he didn't elaborate on that
remark and I didn't press him for a more illuminating answer since he was
leaving our broadcast booth at the moment and I was just coming in, so
neither of us had time for a lengthy chit-chat. And of course, as I'm sure
you must know, on Saturday-Sunday, the pairings are always based upon where
the players stand on the leaderboard.

Wonderful, evocative, stuff. Have saved this one!

Watched the PGA.com 'Allenby' group at about 11pm our time (Oz - we are
about 15 hours ahead of 'Medinah' time!), wondered if it was you with
the commentary...possibly not. I believe you have a deeper voice than
the one I heard.

Also...last piccie I saw of you at some RSG event I am sure you had
rather more hair and rather more waistline.

Thanks for your tale!

cheers
david

It could have been me with the Allenby group that you heard, but it's hard
to be sure since we did get spelled for short periods for potty breaks. You
might have heard one of the other guys, probably Beau.

Waistline hasn't changed much, maybe lost a few lbs., but not as much as I'd
like (now that I'm home again, I intend to return to a workout regimen that
I began a while back). And as for the hair, I still have the same number of
hairs, they just aren't as long right now as they've been in the past.

Good read, Randy. Thank you.

One minor nit to pick - wasn't it 1998 that Vijay won at Sahalee, not
1999?

It absolutely was the '98 PGA that Vijay won at Sahalee. Type-o, no doubt,
as I knew that. My bad.

Thanks for sharing. I managed to listen to pieces of your telecast on
Thursday and Friday, including your cell phone rant. I had my own
little mini-studio setup, using an extra computer monitor we had at
work to show the video full screen.

I even sent a few e-mails and IM's which I'm sure never made it to you.
Important questions like, "Do any great players ever eat cheeseburgers
at the turn?" or when Brett Wetterich came through, "Who is the best
player you know named Bret?"

The answers to which would be:

Only one (same answer to both questions)

A similar tradition exists in the US Open where, during the first 2 days,
they group the reigning US Open, British Open and US Amateur champions. When
I was at Olympia Fields in 2003, that happened to be Tiger Woods, who had
won at Bethpage, Ernie Els, who had won at Muirfield, and Ricky Barnes who
had won the US Amateur. Which reminds me, what ever happened to Ricky
Barnes?

As I recall, the year Ricky Barnes contended at the Masters, R&B was touting
him better than many Touring Pros when trying to make some point about
Amateurs in the field. Great call... LOL!!

Uhhh....you'll have to look that one up. I don't recall ever making such a
statement.

But I will go out on a limb and say Ricky Barnes could dust you without
breaking a sweat. But then again, who couldn't?

Great report! Too bad we never connected -- I'll have to look you up in
Atlanta some time. Also a bit of a shame that you were so busy during
play -- with that "All Access" badge you could get in anywhere. Thanks for
the behind the scenes look at the trucks and broadcast booths. I've toured
a few studios over the years and always found it interesting. Hope this
gets you some more interesting gigs!

He's playing the Nationwide Tour and is now 61st on the money list,
ahead of the likes of Matt Wiebring, Glen Hnatiuk, Zoran Zorkic, Jason
Allred, Grant Waite, Tommy Tolles, Cameron Beckman, Dicky Pride, Scott
Petersen, Wade Ormsby, Esteban Toledo, and Notah Begay.
