Subject: My Prediction for Player of the Year

I'm going to go out on a limb, and say Tiger will win it. There are
two PGA POY's; the older and more traditional is from the PGA of
America, and is based on points earned during the season. The newer
is from the PGA TOUR, and is based on the votes of the pros. The two
have disagreed only twice, the last time in 1991.

Here are the points earned, as of today:

1. Tiger 190
2. Phil 68
3. Ogilvy 54
4. Furyk 44

The points are based on victories, scoring, and earnings, with various
bonuses for majors and/or the Players.

You might think I'm playing it safe, and that Tiger has it clinched.
Not true. Phil could still catch him.

There are ten PGA events left in the 2006 season. Phil would have to
skip the Ryder Cup to play the Valero Texas Open, but as an
independent contractor, it's up to him which events he plays. If he
won all ten events, he would win the money title, and almost certainly
the scoring title as well. Victories, earnings, and scoring all earn
points, and he would end up with 180 points. If, during the same
period, Tiger shot several rounds in the 80's and dropped below fifth
on the scoring list, he would finish with 178 points or less.

If that happened, who would you vote for? Tiger with 6 wins/2 majors,
or Phil with 12 wins/1 major/Vardon/earnings title?

No, Levi won the PGA Tour Player of the Year (Jack Nicklaus Award)...
that is a separate award from the PGA Player of the Year.

Phil Mickelson won the Jack Nicklaus Award in 1990
http://gcaa.collegiategolf.com/home.jsp?page=307

and no less than three college guys got it in 2004
http://www.cstv.com/awards/awards04-05.html

See why it makes more sense to call it the PGA Tour POY?

Those awards are for collegiate players only. Isn't there a separate
Nicklaus award for pros?

Yes, the PGA Tour's Player of the Year Award is also called the Jack
Nicklaus Award. But rarely.

One is the PGA of America POY, and the other is the PGA Tour POY. In
case you missed it, I explained that there were two different awards
in the second sentence of my original post. They are both considered
POYs, and although the PGAofA is the older, I think most pros today,
including Tiger, consider the PGA Tour POY more prestigious. Tiger
has won more POYs in ten years than any other golfer in a career, so
he is qualified to have an opinion on it, and he says the Tour POY
means the most to him because it is awarded by his fellow players.

Liar. Faldo won the POY in 1990. Get your butt outa your head.

Look at the very last entry on that page, and you will see that Wayne
Levi won the TOUR award, as I said. Faldo won the PGAofA award, by
points. There was a reason I was careful to specify that Levi won the
TOUR award by VOTE, but I do assume minimal intelligence on the part
of the reader, in order to keep my posts concise. Since you have made
it painfully obvious (not just in this post, but in your body of work)
that you do not fit that assumption, and are a racist loon to boot,
please stop reading my posts. Thank you.

My bad. Levi was PGA Tour Player of the year in 1990, voted by the
tour pros, not Player of the year awared by points.

In 1990, the first year the PGA Tour awarded it by vote, Nick Faldo
won the Masters and British Open, finished T3 in the US Open, and T19
in the PGA, but the Tour POY went to Wayne Levi, who didn't make a cut
in a single major (or the Player's) that year. Levi had four wins,
only one of which I'd call A-list (the Western; the other three were

Also, in 1974 (before they used points), Johnny Miller won 8 events
and no majors, and beat out Gary Player, who won two majors.

I keep finding more. In 1963, Jack won two, and Boros got POY. In
1966, Jack won two, and Casper got POY. And in 1980, Jack won two,
and Watson got POY. All I can think is either Jack was really
disliked, or majors weren't that important back then.

I think this is a reflection of the warmth and affection that Faldo was held
in by his fellow players.

And as an aside, apropos of the "Nicklaus had better competition" discussion
it is worth remembering that in 1969, at the height of Jack's powers, a
luminary named Frank Beard won the money title. That would be like John
Cook winning a money title in the middle of Tiger's reign.

Jack said in an interview last week that if he had known somebody like

I was thinking that since Norman also seemed to have a better year
than Levi, the voters were just restricting it to Americans.

I would guess that if Phil wins the next 10 tournaments, he will be POY. But
the catch is that he would actually have to win ... being close and friendly
and even determined will not do it.

I'll give you "WERE". But I won't give you "ARE".

OK, so let's take out the Ams. Jones still did it twice. But only once in
1930, which takes all the fun out of my original note.
