Heard that discussion on TGC last night. The course is too easy? It didn't
seem that way with the narrow fairways and deep rough. Must be the soft
greens. What's next? 8000 yd. courses?

No. Just harder greens will fix it. They would put a
premium on precise positioning of the ball in the
fairway. Just like you saw at the B. Open at Hoylake
earlier this month.

I seem to recall the superintendent claiming they had removed over 400
trees.

That has to make the course easier.

Not if it allows the rough to get lots of sunlight and grow really deep
and thick.

Maybe. In the early 1960s, Chicago area golf courses lost thousands of trees
to Dutch Elm disease. They then planted new trees. Some forty years later,
the forests need to be thinned to promote healthy growth. 400 trees could
easily have been removed away from the fairways and out of play.

Exactly. The low scores were certainly not the result of a lack of trees,
that's for sure.

Those guys really are that good. And Tiger is just better than all of them.

There were plenty of trees left, and this time the rough was long and nasty
(low scores in the 2003 US Open at Olympia Fields were blamed on the rough
not growing because of a cold spring). I saw plenty of people hit trees,
including Tiger. Some reasons why I think the whole field was able to score
at Medinah:

1) These guys are really good, and REALLY long, especially with their
irons. This meant that even with the long course they could get away not
hitting driver on many holes and stay out of the rough and trees, and even
when they hit the trees they had options on how to escape.

2) This was a par 72 course. The yardstick everyone thinks of at least is
the US Open, which in recent years has I think always converted 2 par 5's to
par 4s and played as a par 70. This was a par 72 course, and none of the
par 5's were out of reach to everyone. If you want a reasonable scoring
average, take 8 strokes off par and suddenly the scores look a lot like
recent majors.

3) The greens were soft and puttable. I saw Tiger give this as the reason
for his scoring. I heard an explanation that the grass simly hadn't grown
deep enough to get the greens really dry and hard, but it's also been an odd
year for rain here and I think Medinah had some pretty good soakings -- 50
miles west where I live even the well watered courses are rock hard.

4) No wind. Those par 3's over the lake are hell with a good breeze
blowing because it's very open there and very hard to judge the wind. We
had very little wind the whole week, so it was a muted threat.

I think it's silly to worry about how far under or over par people finish.
The question to ask is was it a good test of golf and entertaining to watch.
I don't think I've heard many complaints on either front (well, the only one
I've heard is that the last day was boring because Tiger got ahead early).
The top contenders on all 4 days were mainly former major winners or
candidates for "best player not to have won a major". There was plenty of
action and lead changes, at least until the last 9 holes. Nobody was
complaining about lack of fairness. I think the Medinah members can be
happy with the result (not that the membership had much to do with it other
than agree to let their club be invaded).

It does if there is no wind, like this week.

And, maybe three days of misting and rain softened the greens far beyond
anyone's expectations..AND.... Those guys ARE good!

These guys are getting so good it seems to me like scoring is more a
function of course set-up vs. the course design. I certainly don't think any
less about the quality of Medinah No. 3 just because the winning score will
probably be 16 or more under par.

I suppose most of the Medinah members are going around in 65 and 66
this week.

New course that opened in Wisconsin in August: Erin Hills. From the
tips it plays to 8200 yards.
