If I were Captain of the Americans at this point, I'd probably
take bets from my players against them. "Phil, Chris, I got
$50k that says you can't get any points from Sergio and Jose
Maria." Then I'd follow my guys around the course, heckling
them the whole way. "Come and take my money if you want it,
you choker!" Screw positive thinking, give them constant shit
and they'll find their inner sharks.

So true. People here find it completely bizarre. We just don;t
understand this kind of mentality and thinking.
Is this what it does to American players to be number 1 and 2 in the
world ? Is the sacrifice of all semblance of human emotion the first
requirement to reach that dizzying height ? If so then golf in the US
is in trouble.

Earlier in his career Tiger was heavily criticized for showing emotion. Now
he is criticized for not showing emotion. The guy just can't win with the
critics. But he can win on the golf course and that is what counts.
The Europeans are great at 4-ball match play, foursomes match play, and even
singles match play. But they cannot win in 72 hole stroke play competition
when faced with the toughest fields as they are in the majors and WGC
events. And the old argument about them all being in America is discredited
by the fact that they have won precisely one time out of the twelve of those
events played in Europe since 1999. When the Euros start winning majors and
WGC events, let us know.

I was at the Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills two years ago, and honestly
don't see anything different, this year, between the two sides, than I
saw then.
On the practice tee, first day, Monty, Clarke, Jiminez and Harrington
were hitting balls interspersed with jokes, laughing and very loose. On
the other side of the tee, as far apart as they could possibly be, were
Woods and Mickleson. I knew right then that the Euros had that first
match won.
I think the US gets way too uptight about these matches, motivational
videos, motivational speakers, motivational prayer sessions and fight
songs etc - jeez - gimme a break here!! Meanwhile the Euro team is
down the pub "motivating" themselves with good humour and beer.

I think you are probably right. Daly would be a good fit. Daly once said he
would never be on a Ryder Cup team unless he earned the points, cause no one
would dare to pick him as he does not fit in.
But the Americans need to get loose...too uptight .

I heard Jim Furyk on TGC last night say "we were loose."
Somehow, I'm not entirely convinced that Jim Furyk would be an authority on
"loose."
But I could be wrong.

Quite right - the last thing we ever want is for golf to be treated like
a game.
Perhaps each team could also have a squad of lawyers ready to sue at the

work the crowd. All I can say is, well done Cink!!! Sergio could use
the lesson.
Oh, also well done Europe. The Americans do look a miserable bunch all
3 days. I remember Cink and Henry enjoying it a bit (when they were
playing together) but that was about it.

The Europeans obviously love playing in the Ryder Cup and it means
something to them. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to mean so much
to the US team and they don't seem to enjoy it. I have no idea how you
can change that or even if the PGA, US sports fans or the US public in
general care enough about losing the Ryder Cup that they'll do
something about it.
IMHO having your top players like Mickelson and Woods being so downbeat
about the whole thing does nothing to inspire the 'lesser' players. All
the bigger European players are so up for the match and make the lesser
players feel part of the team that they all play above themselves.
Also, even though the US have the best 2 or 3 players, perhaps now
there is greater strength in depth with the Europeans. Our two rookies,
Stenson & Karlsson both have two wins this year and I wasn't worried
about them taking on any of the US team. Are Taylor and Wetterich
really 2 of the best 10 US players? I thought that Johnson and Henry
looked like they had guts, but Taylor and Wetterich looked out of their
depth.
Lehman's tactics of playing his best 4 players Furyk/Woods and
Mickelson/DiMarco in two pairs gave the impression that they were above
and separate from the rest of the team.

the weakness of Americans, who have died in 5 or more wars in the last
century, helping other countries. It's golf - we'd send a whole

The US has more Ryder Cup victories than Europe and they will surely
bounce back. But I agree with you, it=B4s strange that they should excel
in stroke play - and equally strange how poor the Europeans are at
stroke play. In my humble opinion stroke play is a rather boring form
of golf. Grinding out a decent result is all there is. Match play
demands more guts, more adventure and more risk - to me it=B4s the real
thing. While golf certainly is not war the Ryder Cup is a tremendous
battle and people all over the world find it irrestistible. F

Actually they have a losing record since Europe was added. Most of their
victories came when they were playing against Great Britain and had a
huge population imbalance in their favor. Now Europe has a large
imbalance in their favor so I'd expect them to continue to win about
3/4ths of the events over the long term.
Personally I think that's a good thing as it makes the victories that
much sweeter when they do come.

Europe and the U.S. have about the same number of people, but not
nearly the same number of golfers.

Most of which were one big country against one smaller country. The
rules were changed to make a more balanced match.
