Well, well. Guess who won the LPGA Safeway Classic! Proof that
heart/talent/guts (no puns boys, she's my buddy) trumps
Barbie/Doll/bodies..... again. Congratulations to two really dandy people,
Pat Hurst, and her calm-as-a-clam key grip, Dan Wilson. She played for the
win, and pulled it off with style... flying right elbow notwithstanding. A
great battle took place in Portland, while Tiger was swatting flies on the
network telecast.

In other news: Columbia Edgewater CC was in beautiful condition, especially
considering the virtual, relatively humidity-free heatwave the PNW has
enjoyed,
while most of the country inhales hot water. Once the gun went off, it was
in the
low 90's every day, and 'some' humidity was sneaking out of that tight,
green
carpet, making it just a touch more difficult to be one's self.

The greens were pure as silk, and a lot trickier than they appeared, even on
a second glance. Damn things break backwards, here and there, but most
putts don't break out of the hole. It's sort of like reading Chinese.
Eventually, you forget which way to tilt your head. The fairways were
bright green, but firm, just as the greens were, especially later in the
day. IOW, it was no picnic getting it close, not to mention in.

Believe it or not, an awful lot of people weren't watching the PGA all
weekend. Probably a record gallery for this event, which, by the way, is
the hands-down favorite event among the majority of the players and caddies.
They know how to run a tournament, up in this corner, plus, copious amounts
of quality free food and beverages for participants and public alike.
Potentially drawing from this crowd was an old fart event, at a pretty fancy
track, a mere hour away by helicopter, halfway up in the Cascade's of
Washington, 50 miles east of Seattle, where the weather and course were
exquisite, and some awfully good shots were also made. Boys and girls, this
weekend was golf heaven in the north. The wind didn't even howl in Chicago.
Amazing.

Untelevised on TGC was a threesome scramble-extraviganza:

On approach, player A hits the green too deep, and runs way up to the back.
Not good. Player B hits it a little short-left. Not bad, but not good
either, as the hole is located on a haystack, as seen from the side. Player
C hits short left, bounces into the greenside trap, rolls, and comes to rest
right below the far end lip, which is impossible. Pin high, but one of the
shittiest lies I've ever seen. No way to do anything good, and lots of
potential for a serious trainwreck. What a mess.

Player A rolls the 40-footer up (down, actually) to a foot left of the cup,
then
it trickles 8' by. Uh oh. Player B gets it there, and then some. Player C
(a
young player) studies the situation for a while, and instead of taking an
unplayable, pulls a SW and... all bags and people were moved... drumroll...
somehow, she makes contact... this butt-ugly screamer runs across the front
of the green, stopping, most fortunately, before diving into the short-right
trap. Huh, good shot, kinda. At least she can save bogey with a good chip
and a putt.

Still away, C dunks the chip (her first of two that day) like child's play.
Bang. Player B rolls her ten-footer right in the heart. Bang. A steps up,
takes too much time, but cans her putt too. Bang. Heard on the way to the
next tee: "Another page for the book of different ways to make a par."
[anon.] Good stuff.

That is all.

OK, I was just kidding. There's more. Sequoiyas suck when you're in them.

BB-Ashley: +10/MC/Ouch. Welcome to the big girls tour. Good luck to you
now (yawn).

Regarding the Wie/Johnston separation: My lips are sealed.....
Umgammi-ooh-mummmmi-erm. See? Oh well, Natalie isn't too bad of an
emergency
back-up bag. She'll probably do better, next stop, and he'll probably still
have a job. MW will likely find a looper too. Someone shorter would be a
hoot, I think. (no, Dave)

Obla-di-obla-dah. Hey, I did that with my mouth sewn shut!

FTR, the wind warning was for my post, not the Portland area.

A fun time was had by all...don't worry about missing Sunday's golf
(looping or playing)...ours wasn't much better than yours (our net;
your gross) on Saturday and we had many more bad reads than just one
hole. :-P

Thanks again, it was great to meet everyone. What a super event....you
weren't kidding. I heard they had 60,000 through the gates....a
record, indeed.

Next up: Alderbrook.

P.S. The former Mariner catcher is jocking for Hurst? Good timing for
a career change!

Bad reads happen, but I can think of more appropriate times and places.

Glad you could make it, and thanks for the support. That one read was so
brain-dead I denied myself dinner that night, due to unworthiness. However,
we sure had a nice lunch at the clubhouse, ice sculptures and all. I even
got an Oscar Mayer Weiner-Mobile whistle from the freebee tent. It doesn't
get much better than that.

Oh no. That sucker is tight! Puckers my bung, just thinking about it. <g >

Har, har. Actually, the big kid with Meredith had a cup of coffee as a
starter, with the Yankees, then the Cubs. After 4 arthro's and 1 cut-em-up
shoulder operation, he was toast. Too bad. But, we all had fun, in spite
of ourselves.
