Anyone here going to the LPGA Long's Drug Challenge in Blackhawk? I
noticed that my instructor is playing, teeing off around 7am tomorrow.
Unfortunately I can't get there till probably 11:00 or so. Someone
gave me a tournament pass good for all days. Should be fun!

Since I live in the Bay Area, it will definitely be going on the weekend, if
only because of convenience. However, I really liked the old venue at the
Ridge Golf Course in Auburn.

Oh yeah. I moved here from Oakland in 1979. I remember when Crow
Canyon didn't go through and I could get on Hwy 680 and not see a car
in front of me. Blackhawk is very snooty. We belong to a nice country
club with beautiful homes, but people are more down-to-earth.

heh, Blackhawk is in Danville, or at least it was when I lived there. My
wife worked for the bank in town and she had customers that would demand
that their checks had a Blackhawk, CA address. She would tell them,
"sorry, you're just in Danville, like the rest of us" :)

is the Brass Door still there in San Ramon? We had lots of good times
down there! There and at Primos Pizza ;)

Snooty is as snooty does... Sorry I wasn't there yesterday, and won't be
there this week. To answer your original question, unless you have a friend
there who can get you through the main gate, parking is at the business park
on Camino Ramon, off Bollinger Canyon Rd., for $10. John Q. Public shuttles
run back and forth to the course. Hold your breath on the bus, so you don't
get cooties. Have fun!

I used to commute on I-680 from Livermore (home) to San Jose (work) every
day in the late 1990's. Despite leaving the house at 4:50 a.m. it was still
relatively crowded. I can't imagine being on I-680 without cars.

I went from commuting the bay bridge from Pinole to SSF to doing the San
Pablo Dam Rd, 24 east/north to 680 south to Danville in '85. When I
first started that commute it was not uncommon to not see another car on
680 south from Walnut Creek to Danville and it was about a 25 min trip
total. I played golf with some RSG'ers a couple of weeks ago at Calliepe
(sp?) Reserve in Pleasanton and essentially the same trip (Pinole to
Danville) took almost an hour. Bumper to bumper down 680 south...ugh

When I first got to California from the East, in '62, there was no
such thing as a freeway going north to south/Martinez to Dublin.
When I first started working in Danville, in '66, not only was it not
'680', it wasn't even completed. It stopped north of Walnut Creek and
didn't pick up again until south of Sycamore Valley Rd. The
interchange of 24/680 was just a pile of dirt.
And Dublin? A handful of houses, period.
The good ol' days, when there were still orchards along Danville Hwy.

I've never been to the Ridge Golf Course in Auburn. I'm not much of a
Blackhawk fan, but I live in Danville so it's kind of a no-brainer
decision to go. My only concern is parking. I can't imagine how
they're going to do the parking there. Guess I'll find out tomorrow!

The public parking is supposed to be at Bishop Ranch 3 in San Ramon, where
they will have ticket booths/will call and the shuttle buses.

Ah Calliepe. Do you ever wonder why they named that course after a
butterfly that no one can remember how to spell? That course is
strange. The front nine is so different from the back. Lousy 18th
hole.

I actually really enjoyed the course. At the turn we took a few minutes
and walked over to the edge of the precipice and checked out 18, which
really helped me when I got there. 18 was Driver, 7 iron, 3 wood, 2 putt
par for me. Some of our group, who shall remain nameless, were more than
slightly perturbed that the course Super turned the sprinklers on us in
the middle of our third shots. Me, I just ran out, hit the 3 wood
quick...to 10 ft. Shoulda made that birdie putt :)

I also have to give credit to Dan Driscoll for helping the rest of us
around the course. He's left handed and all of the info he gave us was
backwards but we didn't hold it against him...to much :)

Unusual sequence. Could you describe the layout and options others
took?

306 to the crossing creek lateral hazard from the tee, uphill 2nd shot
to a narrow (really narrow) fairway with bunkers lining the left and
lateral hazard ditch lining the right, requiring a pinpoint uphill 2nd
shot layup of maybe 175 yds (I didn't hit it 306 from the tee, probably
220ish), then 200yds or so, uphill to the green across the same creeky
lateral hazard ravine. A real nasty finishing hole IMO for a public golf
course with a very large gain in elevation, and one that delays play a
bunch as players search for their slices in the hazard on the right on
all 3 shots required on the hole. Not to mention the sprinkler diversion...

Didn't need the bus or a friend. There's a sidestreet near the main

NO! I don't remember the Wicked Eye...why would I? I don't remember any

'S funny, your name was carved in the men's room, along with your
email address and phone number. And it was in your handwriting!
"For a good time, call or email Dave". <There was no answer >
Someone told me. I never went into the Wicked Eye.

But the daughter (Chris) of the owner of The Brass Door (Dick Basso,
at that time) was a student of mine my first year teaching at SRHS, in
'66.
I also remember when Blackhawk was just ranchland with no houses, and
just barely some roads: Dougherty, for one...can't remember the other
one or two right now.
Dave, we'll have to do some San Ramon Valley reminiscing when we get
together next month.

sounds great! I always enjoyed my time in Danville, especially because
it's where I met my wife. But having cruised through a couple of weeks
ago makes me glad that I'm not there any longer

oh, and btw, it was NOT my handwriting...never did do the Wicked Eye.
Always to many big Harleys out front :)

Hee hee. Hey, someone wrote that you get together monthly. Being a

well, we don't really get together weekly, just every once in awhile
when the planets align. Our get together a couple of weeks ago was due
to Bob Patterson from Huntington Beach being in SF for business on Thur.
So I drive up from SLO area to join Peter Strauss and Dan Driscoll for a
